a couple of good laughs but it's not enough

Three childhood friends reunite following their adventurous friend Billy's death. Jerry Conlaine (Matthew Lillard) is struggling at work and missed an anniversary date with his girlfriend. Dan Mott (Seth Green) is a doctor and too scared to ask out his receptionist. Tom Marshall (Dax Shepard) is the irresponsible one. They find the old box filled with D.B. Cooper clues in their old treehouse. Apparently, Billy has been investigating and closing in on his trail. The guys decide to honor Billy by going on the treasure hunt.

The cast is believable as friends although they get a bit annoying. The three guys are still reasonably likable. Essentially Seth takes the brunt of the jokes. There are a couple of good laughs but it doesn't last. This is simply not enough and there are too many setups that don't pay off well.

Without a Brain but Funny Anyway.

Without a Paddle (2004):Dir: Steven Brill / Cast: Seth Green, Matthew Lillard, Dax Shepard, Burt Reynolds, Bonnie Somerville: Strange comedy about danger and its accessibility. Seth Green, Matthew Lillard and Dax Shepard play childhood friends. Green became a doctor overwhelmed with phobias. Lillard struggles with commitment issues. Shepard feels the pressure of bad luck as if a family curse. When they learn of a friend's death they honor that person by going on a long anticipated treasure hunt. They go over waterfalls, get chased by a bear that believes Green its its cub, encounter hairy women in a tree, pursued by marijuana growing criminals, and are involved in an embarrassing intimate moment in the rain. Director Steven Brill has made some crap comedies such as Little Nicky and Mr. Deeds that should be buried and never reclaimed, but here he scores greater laughs, funnier situations and more originality. Green, Lillard and Shepard have an amusing chemistry that plays off effectively despite the fact that the narrative goes too over the top towards the end. Burt Reynolds as a mountain man just doesn't gel, and will be viewed as another bad career choice. Bonnie Somerville plays the female lead because the film obviously called for it and she fit the description. Theme regards friendship, which is the one thing in life we need when our paddle is lost in life's trials. Score: 6 ½ / 10

Coming of Age, Treasure, Comedy, Adventure

My all time favorite movie! This coming of age movie is about 3 friends that venture into the deep woods of Oregon out of respect of their deceased friend and their dreams of finding D.B. Cooper's Treasure. After many years apart from each other, they find that no challenge is too big as the power of friendship prevails. Dax Sheppard, Tom, is probably my favorite of the movie as his sarcastic comedy is right up my alley. I have seen this movie maybe 20+ times and never gets boring because it reminds me that even though the pressures of life seems overbearing at times, spending time with the ones closest to you is the greatest way of bringing you back down to earth. Bet you 100 grand and a left nut you will not be disappointed!! :DD
