Great disaster movie

Whenever comes to Steven Spielberg, it will be definitely a masterpiece. This one is very spectacular because he is using animatronics rather than using visual effects. A definitely watch movie. Tom Cruise played a divorced dad character which is willing to do anything to safeguard his daughter, played by Dakota Fanning.

COMPLETELY different from the book... but it wasn't bad

I read the book when I was in sixth grade and not only was it long kind of outdrawn but also pretty confusing. For example, when the Heat Ray first appeared in the book, I did not picture them being zapped by the Heat Ray... I pictured people passing out from a heat wave. Yeah, maybe reading the book only four years ago was not such a good idea because it was really long and sometimes boring... to the point where I only remembered half the book when I finished reading it.

This particular adaptation (out of many others) is so far the only one that I have seen and it is, like I said, COMPLETELY different from the book. First off, the book was set (and written) in 1890's London, whereas this movie is set in modern day US. The main protagonist also did not even have a name in the book and the only family mentioned was his wife and cousins.

Bottom line, the movie was actually pretty good despite its differences from the book. I would recommend the book to anyone old enough to understand what is going on. But in the case of both the movie and the book, do not expect a full-on action story or you will be disappointed. The movie was visually astounding and the script was fairly decent. Despite the fact that the plot was a lot different in that most scenes were put in a different order if not completely changed

For Spielberg, it was okay.

Very well displayed what people do after this sort of catastrophe, and was suspenseful as well as depressing.
