A plot with some holes - but good action.

Multiple loop running retrospective can be good film, and in Vantage Point it's getting close to being something great, but not quite. Not that a plot where there's a conspiracy to assassinate the US president is very original, and that they could have found somebody else than William Hurt to play him, but the editing and directing and some of the acting here is damn good handwork. It's the story that could have been better worked out.

The action scenes are some of the better that I've seen, never boring, and the story also has some creative unexpected turns. Too bad then with the holes in plot and some loose ends. The plan behind the assassination is barely mentioned, no answer to who and why, and it seems that there has been a strong urge to make the action thriller and not being too political. It works some how, though it ends up lacking realism. And calling the TV broadcasting company GNN is just a bit silly. This is after all not meant to be a parody.

The media and political terror aspects could have been given more space and some how woven in to the plot, but this was decided to be 1 hour 28 minutes, no more, like some sacred genre code. The result ends up being not as good as the potential, so why the rush? Still, they made a few seconds in the end to remind as that this was inspired by the JFK assassination, though a similar but longer kind of version of that conspiracy could have been much more interesting.

A Good Film Lessened by the Repetitive Flashbacks

"Thomas Barnes" (Dennis Quaid) is a member of the Secret Service who has recently recovered from taking a bullet that was intended for the President of the United States. Although he has been ruled as physically fit for duty several fellow Secret Service agents question whether he is mentally up to the task. In any case, when a high-level conference in Spain requires "President Ashton" (William Hurt) to attend Thomas is sent as one of his bodyguards. What Thomas doesn't realize, however, is that the President's security has been compromised and several Islamic terrorists are waiting for him. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that this was a somewhat entertaining film due in large part to the action scenes and the twists in the plot. One thing I didn't like, however, were the numerous flashbacks which I thought detracted from the film rather than adding anything to it. In any case, those who enjoy action movies might like this particular film and I have rated it accordingly. Slightly above average.

ButterFace

Our son recently told us after the fact that, his date earlier that evening, was a real butter-face, but not having a millennial lexicon available, his his mother inquired as to what he meant by butter-face? Well mom, everything is perfect about this girl in almost every way...(butterface). https://youtu.be/Az83wgx3dwg

Thus, Vantage Point was a real butter-face project which means that there is a lot to really like about it (seriously), but once its over & credits begin to roll across the screen, its likely that, many will wonder why they enjoyed it.

But, for personal entertainment value alone, Vantage Point receives a stellar 7, but honestly this movie had the potential to be something really, really exceptional...
