Shallow villain + useless romance Vs. Great visuals + interesting universe

A hard movie to rate. I WANT more movies like this: Fantasy/sci-fi with nice gci, not afraid to propose different universe settings, tons of alien races, new tech, etc etc etc. That earns it 1 more point from my original 6 rating.

The romance part is surreal. In a real setting where your life is in danger and you have some serious missions, people do NOT waste time acting like two lovebirds. She plays hard-to-catch and the guy is dumbly and completely in love, proposing marriage before the first kiss and whatnot. It adds nothing to the plot, the synergy of the characters could have been easily established without it. The villain is set up to be 100% evil and shallow, EASY for the audience to hate him. As soon as he poses even a spark of an interesting philosophical conflict (the consequences for the humans to have admitted his mistake), he is promptly met with a fist on his face by Valerian, reassuring that no deep conflict would be present in the plot.

Unfortunately not a good movie

This movie could have been a tribute to the creative, smart and wonderful comics that it was adapted from. I expected Luc Besson to honor the tradition of french comic art but he failed. The two lead characters are totally unlikeable and played by two incompetent actors. Cara Delivigne is not able to get rid of her petrified stern look, I wonder if that lady is actually able to use all the muscles of her face. Looking at her makes me feel very uncomfortable, she looks more machine to me than the K5 robots. The design was totally over the top, as expected. A perfect ads movie for any LED vendor, everyone and everything had dozens of glowing lights all over them. Physical laws get ignored constantly, time and space seem to work differently from our own reality. The story plot was kinda constructed and did not convince at all. Where Fifth Element had great acting and a self-ironic humor, this movie was unfunny, full of really bad dialogue, way too long for the naive and uninspired plot and suffered from really bad acting, even from actors like Clive Owen. There was a lot of money dumped into the over the top CGI, but the end result has no soul at all.

A masterpiece

I suspect a lot of Americans don't like this film because it isn't American. This film is everything the new Star Wars films should have been. Outstanding effects, great plot, good fun and highly entertaining. A must see!
