Not your run-of-the-mill apocalypse movie

I was a little skeptical about this movie going in, but since I am becoming a growing fan of Australian films these days, and because I just can't ever resist Jessica De Gouw, I thought I'd give it a shot. And I was handsomely rewarded!

The story starts with an oncoming asteroid/comet/fireball that is due to hit and obliterate Earth, and the accompanying countdown to the end of life as we know it. All of humanity is aware it is coming, and there is nothing that can be done about it. James (Nathan Phillips) is leaving Zoe (Jessica De Gouw) in bed (idiot!) to travel accross town to attend the party to end all parties. This begins a tale which is sometimes touching, sometimes crazy, and sometimes terrifying.

The imagery is beautiful throughout, and the film offers a unique vision of how humanity would spend it's last 12 hours on Earth, culminating nicely with a very tender and loving moment between Phillips and DeGouw.

This is a good film...it keeps you focused the entire time, and sews itself up nicely in the end, which to me, is the sign of good storytelling.

Special shoutout to Angourie Rice, who does a great job of playing a little girl who is simply trying to find her father, and in the end helps James come to his senses and return to Zoe.

Another great job by the Australian film industry!

A really touching story of Redemption

Meet James. He's an immature guy living his life from one bottle to the next. He's a terrible boyfriend and a cheat. His relationship with his mother is nonexistent. He's a terrible friend. He's an alcoholic and full of aggression and rage and just doesn't care about anyone or anything....until he meets Rose, an innocent little girl looking for her father, on this day, the last day before the end of the world.

It might not seem like much, but this is a touching heartfelt story of redemption. It raises the questions: Is it too late to change? Is it too late to realise your mistakes and atone for them?

What starts off slow pays off if you stick with it. As you progress through the journey with James and Rose, you'll find yourself caring more and more about them. The climax is worth it and if you don't shed a tear, you'd hardly be human. This is without a doubt one of the best hidden gems I have ever seen. Truly a magnificent experience on a limited budget, but so much more. It's a story that will leave a lasting impression and cause you to look inside yourself. Are you living as well as you could be? What if you didn't have time to correct your sins?

Do yourself a favor and see it. I promise that you won't regret it.

Good

These Final Hours plays just a few hours before doomsday, whereas many people are going crazy and/or try to cope in one or the other way, as they all know about their certain death, a young man saves a little girl from some abusers and takes care of her, finally, this girl gives our hero some redemption and closure before the final act. This is really a surprisingly good little flick - all the actors play well, and whereas the production is not too big, it is sufficient enough to carry the story, and on top, the plot is interesting and gives us some new angle on the apocalyptic movie genre. A must see - at least for every fan of the genre.
