a monster you can really care for,...

If ever there was a "nice guy" monster, this is it. Lon Chaney, Jr. plays Larry Talbot--the son of a rich land owner (played by the great Claude Rains). Well, one day Larry is going for a walk and is just minding his own business when he's attacked by what he at first thinks is a wolf. Well, it turns out to be a werewolf and he is bitten in the process, so he is doomed to spend all the nights with full moons seeking out humans to rip to shreds. Bummer--especially since Larry is a really nice guy and you do feel very sorry for him--this is the best aspect of the story. Well, our hero is indeed a sweet guy, though pretty dumb, as it never occurs to him that he COULD be locked in a padded cell and kept there whenever there's a full moon. Instead, he again and again roams the countryside ripping apart innocent folks until eventually he is killed by Talbot's nice father--who only then realizes the immensity of his deed. I think he should have stopped feeling so bad about killing the young man, as Larry is back in a couple more films as apparently it's tough to kill a werewolf EVEN IF YOU ARE USING SILVER! So, Claude, relax,...you didn't really kill him. At least not permanently!

Still effective after all these years

I remember first seeing The Wolf Man when I was 8 11 years ago, and being quite unnerved. Now it doesn't as much, but the atmosphere is still there and I can also appreciate the film for its other successful components. The film may look dated compared to what's going on today with technology to some, but I personally think for its time The Wolf Man is well made and when I watch it today I think the production values have their charm. The sets and costumes are highly atmospheric, and the make up is exceptional. The music is also chilling, the direction is fine, the script is intelligent and literate and the plot captivates. The performances are excellent too, Maria Ouspenskaya and Bela Lugosi are great, Claude Rains is superb and Lon Chaney Jnr gives a very sympathetic and believable performance in the title role. The only qualms that I have with this movie are its rather short length and one or two scenes in the middle that drag. Other than that, it is a very effective and atmospheric film. 8/10 Bethany Cox

When That Wolfbane Blooms

Universal Studios which was THE studio for developing Gothic horror films, after a run of Dracula and Frankenstein films and Mummy, developed a third franchise with the creation of the wolfman.

Lon Chaney, Jr. finally stepping into the horror film tradition of his father is the protagonist here. Lawrence Talbot, second son of a titled English family, comes home to his father who is grieving over the death of his first son. After settling in, Chaney becomes involved with some gypsies and has occasion to kill a wolf who had killed a village girl.

But that wolf was a werewolf and in his human form was Bela Lugosi. In the struggle Chaney is bitten and becomes a werewolf himself.

Universal really assembled a top flight cast of players for this debut film of the wolf man series. Besides Chaney and Lugosi, Claude Rains, Warren William, Patric Knowles, Ralph Bellamy and Evelyn Ankers are in it. Of course the best of the lot is Maria Ouspenskaya as the old gypsy woman who is Lugosi's mother. Interesting that in a film with a United Kingdom setting only Knowles and Rains are British by background.

Still its grand Gothic horror as we don't see today and as Universal was the master.
