Quite effective mid-budget chiller

Feisty daughter returns to her dead mother's house and experiences unexplained supernatural phenomena.

Quite effective mid-budget chiller, which, at least, is largely explained at the end (although the fate of the two missing persons is rather ambiguous).

Most scares are signposted (apart from two effective jump scares), which takes away the impact somewhat, but overall it is quite effective. Similar to 'Stir of Echoes' in plot.

My main criticism is that everyone seems to do everything alone. Whereas this is understandable for the loner heroine, a cop is unlikely to go into a house alone and knock a house about to get evidence (you would hope).

I suspect the writers were subconsciously influenced by 'Salem's Lot', as some of the characters' names are similar - ie. Glick/Barlow.

At one point the heroine gets a probate cheque for thousands of dollars. In the UK this process would take at least 18 months, but here seems to be completed with the stroke of a pen.

Overall, I'm being hypercritical, as it is well worth watching and is eminently watchable, if the plot devices are somewhat familiar in films of this type.

Worth checking out.

Another "meh" pretend horror movie

I say "pretend horror" because in no way is this a horror movie. This is a thriller that has been labeled as a horror movie for whatever reason.

-boring from start to finish -not scary at all (I watched it alone, lights out, headphones in, and I get scared easily).

Nothing stands out as particularly awful, it's just that everything, every single aspect of this movie from start to finish is boring and uninspired.

I keep going on reddit to look up what other people say are the scariest horror movies they've seen, and I find I have to swim through a sea of mediocre movies in order to get to the scary ones. I'll just name some movies I think are scary and interesting so you can get an idea of my taste

Event Horizen REC 1 and 2 (2 is largely stupid though, it just has some amazing scenes) Last Shift Eden Lake (not horror, just horrific) It Follows The Descent As Above, So Below Unfriended (maybe if I see it again I'll change my mind, but this one got to me) V/H/S first short, called "Amateur Night" (the rest is crap)

5 for being truly mediocre.

Mommy...who's that behind you?

A-Z Horror Movie of the Day..."The Pact" (R - 2012 - US)

Sub-Genre: Paranormal/Disturbing

My Score: 8.0

Cast=6 Acting=7 Plot=8 Ending=9 Story=9 Scare=8 Jump=7 F/X=8 Creep=9 Disturb=9

As a woman struggles to come to grips with her past in the wake of her mother's death and the disappearance of her sister, an unsettling presence emerges in her childhood home.

"Mommy...who's that behind you?" I loved this was a combination of Paranormal and Disturbing horror wrapped in pretty flowered wallpaper. The layers of this film were really good...starting out as basically a haunted house movie. Then slowly pulling on that thread until the movie completely me one of my favorite twists of all time!! In the world of Indie horror, I treated this movie as a gift. Don't wait till Christmas to unwrap this one.
