Going on a fall break

A group of young folks decide to spend their college fall break at a remote beach house. Naturally, things go horribly awry when a vicious psycho starts bumping the young people off in assorted gruesome ways.

Writer/director Buddy Cooper relates the familiar, but still enjoyable and engrossing story at a steady pace, generates a reasonable amount of tension and creepy atmosphere, takes time to develop the genuinely likeable main characters, and delivers several potent moments of heavy duty graphic splatter. Moreover, Ruth Martinez makes for a personable final girl, Jack Chatham projects an unsettling quiet menace as the killer, and delectable brunette Frances Raines goes skinny-dipping. Peter Schnell's slick cinematography provides an impressive polished look. Michael Minard's shuddery synthesizer score hits the shivery spot. The goofy, yet catchy soft-rock theme song is an absolute hoot. A real gory blast.

A lesser slasher flick

THE MUTILATOR is one of the lesser slasher flicks of the 1980s that I've watched, a film which singularly fails to offer up anything that's new in the genre. We get a bunch of annoying teenagers hanging out in a dilapidated old beach house and finding themselves preyed upon by a maniac with a rather silly and unbelievable back story that drove him over the edge. The dialogue is mundane, the performances from the unknown cast are anything but invigorating, and the only thing this film really has to offer is a series of sequences featuring some sloppy and occasionally imaginative gore effects. Our characters are chainsawed, pitchforked, and generally mutilated before death as per the title. Sadly there's very little in the way of suspense to go with the bloodshed, leaving this an unfulfilling experience even for horror fans.

Somehow Entertaining

A teenager who accidentally committed matricide finds himself being hunted together with his girlfriend and mates by his now crazed father.

Nobody in their right mind would call this a "good" film. The budget is very low, the acting atrocious. The lines are delivered very poorly. One of the actors is quite obviously gay but this is never addressed, making the interactions he has with the women rather comical -- unintentionally. Stranger than all that, though, is the fact this horror film has an upbeat theme song.

But this is all in good fun. I love good slashers and bad slashers. This is a bad one, but that makes it all the more fun. The only ones I don't like are the middle of the road, boring ones. And unfortunately there are far too many of those.
