Yep. Herbie Was One Nasty, Little Car

Well - I know one thing for certain - Whatever it was (and it was never explained) that "possessed" Herbie (the VW Love Bug) - I'd say that this bewitched, little vehicle was clearly of an unsound mind.

Not only did "Herbie" have a peculiar attitude towards being irrationally destructive - But he also threw perplexing temper tantrums and had strong suicidal tendencies, as well.

With disturbing qualities such as these - Had "Herbie" actually been a real person - You can bet that he'd be under the close observation of a very concerned psychiatrist.

I think it's interesting to note that the VW logo was never featured in this live-action cartoon at all. And that's because Disney Productions had not been given the OK from the Volkswagen auto-maker to use their name in any way.

And - As a final note - This "Disney-cute" Comedy/Romance (from 1968) was completed on a $5 million budget. It went on to gross 10x that amount at the box-office.

Daft, amusing and very likable

This little charmer from Disney is in effect a live action cartoon. It was the first film to feature the character Herbie, who of course is none other than the lovable Volkswagen Beetle car who has a mind of its own. The story boils down to Herbie finding himself between two race drivers, one who is a mediocre driver but with a heart of gold, while the other is far more talented but is an utter cad. Unsurprisingly Herbie chooses to be with the former, creating all manner of tensions when the latter tries all manner of underhand tactics to either get the car back or to sabotage it. The film climaxes in a memorable race scene.

Set in and around picturesque San Francisco locations and boasting a nice lush soundtrack, The Love Bug is a fun, good natured romp. It has an amusing performance from David Tomlinson as the baddie, in a role where he chews the scenery at every given opportunity, by the final race he is very much like a live action Dick Dastardly! The other human performer whom I liked was Michele Lee, who plays a character caught between both drivers; she is really lovely here and a radiant presence throughout. But at the end of the day, The Love Bug ultimately belongs to Herbie. He may be a pile of metal but it's easy to go along with the film and believe in him. The final race is a fitting end to things where Herbie and the gang give it that little bit extra and get us over the line with a smile. On the whole, very likable stuff.

One of my favorites

When it comes to live action Disney films I am not impressed but The love bug is by far one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. The characters are a likable and funny Herbie is my one of my favorite Disney characters of all time. He makes me laugh and cry. I really wish Disney would make another sequel to the Herbie series as I really enjoyed this movie and its sequels as well But I guess this is why it such a classic film. I was so happy when Disney finally released this movie on blue ray for the first and along with its three sequels. I have blue 1969 Volkswagen beetle and I love it very much and sometimes I feel like its alive like Herbie.

This movie is defiantly masterpiece for a car film worth watching
