Started off OK, then died completely

What a joke of a movie, started out with plenty of potential. Then ended up being some kind of Stockholm syndrome, I mean seriously the girl who left him for dead, a serial bully an thief saves his life. Okay, just so many floors in this movie. Save yourself some time an don't bother watching this layered pile of crap. Giving it a 3 was me being kind, I've see some awful movies but this takes the biscuit. It's like the writers who adapted this for the American version just totally had a day of getting drunk an coming out with crap. Seriously how can a girl with a loaded gun aim it at cops an not be shot down, why you insulting our intelligence. At least make it plausible, just poor writing after poor writing. An at the end lying in his hospital bed to bring him out of his near death. Okay, Oscars all around especially for the writers for this movie version

Bumbling misfire

That THE INVISIBLE is so obviously a film aimed at teenagers (and full of 'teenspeak' and the like) is one of the main problems it has. It's also not an invisible man story, which I couldn't help but be disappointed by, but more of a ghost film with a twist. Director David S. Goyer seems to be a big name in Hollywood these days with his scripts for superhero movies, but this is more in line with the Full Moon Pictures fare he started out doing.

Justin Chatwin (DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION) is the bland hero who suffers a violent fate at the hands of some local drug dealers and is thus trapped in a kind of limbo state, much like in the (better) GHOST. Honestly, his character isn't so bad, but the stakes are kind of low and I didn't care much about whether he lived or died. The whole hanging-around-people-grieving thing is rather clich├ęd while the mystery and detection aspects of the narrative are poorly handled.

Worst of all is supporting character Annie, played by the cold Margarita Levieva. The viewer is supposed to invest in her character as she undergoes some redemptive character arc, but I couldn't stand her from beginning to end, and the end is just cheesy by the way. So no, this attempt at making a LOVELY BONES-style fantasy film for teenagers has too many problems to be a success.

See the ghost

David Goyer directs but does not write this remake of a Swedish film.

Nick Powell (Justin Chatwin) is bright, well to do teenager who plans to move to London and get away from his cold, distant mother.

His nerdy friend has borrowed money from some Annie and some high school heavies and they are putting pressure on him. Annie is a delinquent who is also involved in some stolen car ring.

Nick gets attacked by Annie and her thugs as they wrongly believe that he grassed them up. Thinking he is dead they throw him down a manhole cover.

Nick is not dead, he walks around school but no one sees him or can hear him speak. He realises that he is in some limbo but his body is still alive and he needs to get the police to find his body before it is too late.

The film does not start out too great with many of the usual High School tropes and stereotypes. It gets interesting after Nick gets attacked but it is not a case of whodunit, we know who did it. It is more like Nick discovering why he in this netherworld and what can be done about it.

The film tries to subvert expectations as we try to understand Annie the delinquent but we never really care for her or her problems. After all she did beat up an innocent guy and left him for dead.

Maybe if Goyer had written this film we might had got a more interesting slant but it is a routine movie sold as some low budget independent type film mainly because of its soundtrack.
