Too much imagination and unrealism.

This movie is the sequel to "The Grudge", an American remake of a Japanese horror film based on the story of a powerful haunt. The first movie is good enough to be worth it but this sequel does not have the same strength and quality. The script is an unlikely story of haunting involving teenagers and the younger sister of the first film protagonist while the curse, almost unbelievably, moves to the United States. The story simply never has the credibility or ability to get us involved, even though there are several scary moments that remind us of the strength of the first movie. Everything always sounds false and forced. Another bad thing is the poor quality of the cast, which doesn't do more than it really has to do. The direction of Takashi Shimizu is relatively acceptable but, from the moment the script was written and developed in a bad and unrealistic way, the film is irreparably damaged. It's a good movie to see if we're able to ignore the lack of logic and coherence of the story and focus on what we're watching, but its far from the first film and probably miles away from the original Japanese.

Milk isn't scary

In modern times, horror movies are probably the lowest form of entertainment, but then again there was a horror movie ("Silence Of The Lambs") that won Best Picture whereas an animated film has yet to. This movie doesn't help. I admit to not having seen the original and I honestly don't care to. I guess if I had, I would have been able to understand this more. The film was already confusing enough. It showed a bunch of separate characters doing mostly unrelated things. Most of the movie is just plain boring. To top it all off, at the end nothing is really ever resolved and it's just the same as it always was.

The film features mostly bad acting. Everything just seems so scrambled and disorganized. I don't care to pay attention to the story because it's too laughable. There's one scene where they try to make a woman drinking milk scary. Yes, and then she throws it up. This is really stupid. They also try to make hair scary by having hair cover up this girl in a phone booth. It's as stupid as it sounds. We keep seeing these ghost faced children over and over and they simply look ridiculous. Everything moves slowly and it's hard to understand anything. It's weird how "Scary Movie 4" which most people don't like it still more entertaining than this as is actually has intentional jokes. *1/2

Effectively spooky with great cast, but weak story structure

Released in 2004, "The Grudge 2" details events in Japan centering around a cursed house, which three schoolgirls visit in the opening act. Whoever enters the house is cursed and will die by spooky child-like specters. Amber Tamblyn plays the protagonist, the sister of the protagonist of the first film, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar (who has a small role here). Teresa Palmer and Sarah Roemer are also on hand as schoolgirls with Jennifer Beals playing the mother of the latter. Edison Chen, Takako Fuji and Matthew Knight also have significant roles.

This is a well-made horror flick that focuses on haunting atmosphere and ghostly scares rather than cartoony gore. There's a darkroom sequence that's particularly effective. The cast is superior to the first movie, with numerous female characters and quality actresses to play 'em. Unfortunately, the story structure is weak in that it fails to work up suspense, except for maybe the last act where the filmmakers (try to) tie everything together. The first hour feels like several vignettes rather than a cohesive screenplay. I don't have a problem with non-linear story lines IF they're done right, like 1994's "Pulp Fiction" and 2007's "Before the Devil Knows Your Dead," but "The Grudge 2" is a good example of how NOT to do them.

Despite my criticisms, I like this movie and think it's very worthwhile if you're in the mood for a haunting picture in the mold of 2002's "The Ring." Some have even called it the scariest movie ever made. I get where they're coming from, but "The Grudge 2" didn't scare me because I don't find ghosts scary. However, it IS spooky and thick with haunting ambiance. That said, some scenes could go either way depending on the person. For instance, when a certain character falls off (or is thrown off) the roof of a tall building and lands almost at the feet of a couple other characters I couldn't help laughing.

The movie runs 102, 108 minutes for the Director's Cut, and was shot in Tokyo, Chicago and Pasadena.
