Robert Mitchum!

Oh my! Must first say Robert Mitchum is my FAVorite actor of all time! And the most under-rated or the most under-afforded get movie roles! For some reason at that time, maybe his bold nature, he was not considered for some of the great roles of his time. Snobby Hollywood may have given too much notice to his cavelier nature and "pot" smoking. Roles went instead went to Jimmy Stewart, Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, Rock Hudson, Clark Gable, William Holden, Marlon Brando, and the likes. Just take a look at his performances in Heaven Knows Mr. Allison, The Night of the Hunter, Thunder Road, and Cape Fear- to mention a few. The Enemy Below also fits in this group. A most unique war story with a fascinating plot, humanizing both sides of the war conflict. The enemy commander, played by Curd Jürgens, provides such a plausible and compelling wartime story. A war story that does not ignore human nature and respect. I will, as long as I live, wave my flag high and vigorously for Robert Mitchum. A "ONE OF A KIND" man and actor! Would also consider Clark Gable in the same light. God rest their souls and may their memorable movies endure for all time.

Duel at sea between Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens fighting with their ships

An excellent war film, almost comparable with "Run Silent, Run Deep" also about submarine activity, but this one is in colour with outstanding photography, which makes the monotonous sea scenery a never boring thing; while Robert Wise's war drama in Japan is much more intense and dramatic. Here the two captains are poised against each other fighting out a sea duel with their ships at stake, Robert Mitchum waging his destroyer and Curt Jurgens staking his u-boat. Jurgens is the better actor and plays out his part with convincing power, while Robert Mitchum is just cool as always. It's a rather slow film, only gradually the real drama is building up but rewarding in the end with a finale that no one could have expected. There are some breath-taking sequences, as when the Americans go fishing without knowing the submarine is right under them, and when the destroyer passes exactly above the u-boat, so it could have chafed its bottom.

It's a classic indeed, and notable is also Theodore Bikel as Curt Jurgens' second, a great character player always appearing in great quality films. He was the original Captain Trapp on Broadway.

Terrific WWII naval dogfight - Mitchum vs. Jurgens

Taught WWII naval dogfight between US destroyer captain Robert Mitchum and German U-Boat commander Curt Jurgens. The Nazi's are certainly the bad guys, but they are treated with a surprising amount of respect, which was unexpected, though I suppose this picture was made 12 years after the war, so maybe that was enough time for Germans to be good again. Directed by song and dance man Dick Powell, he's crafted a tight muscular war film that I would rank as the best submarine picture up to this point.
