Thought provoking and emotional

The Door in the Floor is very thought provoking and quite emotional and really is gut wrenching. There are several sub-plots and one feature is the affair between Marion Cole (played by the beautiful Kim Basinger) an Eddie O'Hare (played by Jon Foster) which went against typical movie norms. Traditionally, when the male seduces the female, the male is often older, or at least the actor is much older than the actress (e.g. Basic Instinct, Don't Look Now) but here Kim Basinger is 30 years older than Jon Foster, and kudos to the production team for not shying away from this.

quietly suffering

Ted Cole (Jeff Bridges) is a famous writer but his marriage to Marion (Kim Basinger) is in major difficulties after suffering a tragedy. They live in a northeast beach community with their daughter Ruth (Elle Fanning). Alice (Bijou Phillips) is the nanny. Eddie O'Hare (Jon Foster) arrives to be an intern for Ted and quickly has an affair out in the open with Marion. Ted has his own affair with his sketch model Evelyn Vaughn (Mimi Rogers).

This is a family quietly suffering. I guess that's the point of the movie. It's like sharing in their unresolved issues. I don't really connect with any of the characters. Everything is muted. The emotions are bubbling under the surface most of the time. I appreciate this movie for what it is but there isn't much enjoyment in it.

Wonderful bridge between Tragedy and Comedy

This is a wonderful movie about coming of age and the difficulties in the everyday family life. This movie unites in a wonderful form comedy and tragedy with Jeff bridges in a top form. The story about a writer that deals with the death of his sons and that for often feels regret and sadness. The accident also distresses the family life. It also is about coming of age of a young student that is hired to assist Bridges and to get experience in writing. Bridges's wife and this young student get very close in a form to even more disturb family life in the little idyllic farm of the writer. So it's a wonderful comedy and drama representing the daily family life.
