Potential

A real Dilemma. So much potential, two of the most wanted comedians right now. So how could this go wrong? (not to mention the female talent on hand here).

Difficult to answer (as is the Dilemma which the movie is about), but apart from quite a few really good moments, there seem to be quite a few missed opportunities too. And while it does not really go "soft" on you (or maybe that is what you wanted), there seems to be so much more there that never gets explored. Neither dramatically nor comically. Which is more than a shame.

Not the actors fault though and this might be one of the best efforts Kevin James has put on the big screen lately. There is not much left of his King of Queens magic/mojo

The Dilemma

It has been a while since director Ron Howard has made a comedy film, he did some really good ones such as Splash, Parenthood and The Grinch, I had heard of this film but I didn't know it was his work, but I was interested. Basically Ronny Valentine (Vince Vaughn) and Nick Brannen (Kevin James) have been best friends since college, and have worked together for the last few years as well, Ronny has girlfriend Beth (A Beautiful Mind's Jennifer Connelly) and Nick has wife Geneva (Winona Ryder). They both work as partners in an auto design firm, and with their supervisor Susan Warner (Queen Latifah) they have pitched a new electric car design, and they are given a week to build it. One day while planning a proposal at a botanical garden Ronny spots Geneva with another man, Zip (Channing Tatum), laughing and having a good time, but then he sees them passionately kiss. Knowing that she is having an affair he wonders whether he should tell Nick, he gets mixed opinions on what to do, and he does not want to ruin the friendship, the business opportunity and the failing marriage. Obviously Ronny confronts Geneva herself, she claims it meant nothing, and more importantly that it's over, but of course that is untrue, but Nick has secrets himself. Because of the amateur investigation into the affair and odd behaviour, and Nick knowing a proposal is taking too long Beth and the others (besides Geneva of course) are concerned Ronny is breaking down of something. So when a psychiatrist or whatever is brought round, that is when he finally snaps and bursts out with the confession of what he saw Geneva doing, Nick is obviously devastated, possibly more that he kept it so long. They do eventually settle things in order to carry on with the big electric car deal, Geneva didn't deny the affair for too long and she seemingly leaves, Beth accepts an engagement, and Ronny and Nick are still indeed friends. Also starring Chelcie Ross as Thomas Fern, Amy Morton as Diane Popovich and Clint Howard as Herbert Trimpy. Vaughn does alright as the secret keeping chum, James has his small moments as his buddy, Ryder does quite well as the cheating wife, and Connelly is okay, this doesn't feel like Howard's previous comedy work, and it isn't one of the funniest comedy films I've seen. Okay!

Tough material to make fun of

Ronny Valentine (Vince Vaughn) is Nick Brannen's (Kevin James) best friend from college and partner in their own auto design firm. Ronny has girlfriend Beth (Jennifer Connelly), and Nick is happily married to Geneva (Winona Ryder). Then Ronny spies Geneva making out with another man.

This is probably the worst Ron Howard movie I've ever seen. I don't know what the original intention was. Is cheating in a marriage really slapstick comedy material? Vince Vaughn and Kevin James could be a funny team in another movie. I just can't tell as I worry about what's going on in that marriage. If you're making fun of this material, you'd have to go dark. Neither guy is that great at dark comedies and Ron Howard is the last person to direct that.
