Shades of Fargo

Snowbound location. Pitch black comedy. A corpse that's central to the plot. The Big White was obviously influenced by Fargo, the Pulp Fiction of wintry crime comedies, but holds its own fairly well thanks to solid acting and writing. It's nothing new or incredible, but it'll get you your perversely humorous noir fix, and who can say no to Robin Williams, playing a pitiable travel agent who spies a risky way to end his financial problems. Discovering a frozen corpse, he has the brilliant idea to pass it off as his deceased brother and collect the insurance money. A few problems lie ahead: a dogged insurance investigator (Giovanni Ribisi), two moronic hit men (Tim Blake Nelson & W. Earl Brown) and the small detail that his brother isn't actually dead, and comes waltzing back into his life in the form of a rampaging, unstable Woody Harrelson. William's spitfire wife (Holly Hunter) looks on in exasperation as her husband turns their lives into disaster, while everyone is somewhat clueless and misinformed, leading to great amounts of hilarity. Sound chaotic? It is, sort of. It's also kinda laid back and deadpan enough to make the Coen brothers proud. Harrelson and Williams both bring their very different brands of manic, Williams I'm a forlorn desperate sense, and Harrelson just the unhinged wildcard. Alison Lohman is also running about, but it's been so long since I saw it I can't remember exactly who she plays. Fans of Fargo will be tickled, those with a weird sense of humour as well. Fun stuff.

Between Fargo and Insomnia (web)

I expected to watch a movie about a winter holidays vacations and it turns up it's rather a black comedy in which a husband, Robin, tries to scam his insurance officer, Ribisi, to help his disturbed wife, Holly. Honestly, it will not be remembered as a classic for each of them and the movie is sometimes sluggish and dull ! For a funniest cumbersome corpse movie, you should take a look at the old french one « Joe » that shares a lot of situations. But this one has fantastic outdoors, up in this Northen Alaska town really covered by snow, and for one time, not destroyed by the common color grading ! Robin is good as this little crook with a heart as well as Holly who proves one more time her dynamic and crazy side ! Ribisi, whom i watched recently in "the gift" confirms he is a young talent much more convincing than the ones you always heard of (ex : Rockwell). The psychic girl was charming and i was sure to have seen her before : it's only now that i catch that she stars in Tim Burton's « Bigfish » indeed !

Nice one (not perfect).

Maybe the premise is all too familiar and a little on the unbelievable side, but I've heard of plenty of cases in which people do much more silly, yet brutal things for all the wrong (or sometimes even right) reasons. The big plus here is that the cast really take things to a higher level; there's plenty of black comedy here, but also sincere themes and characters.

The soundtrack has plenty of atmospheric, serene stuff in it, but also the more rugged pop rock by Eels - both work terrifically. The snowy landscapes and the nice cinematography also add to the enjoyment. In the end, though, it's too bad that things get a little too silly again; Paul forgets to take the keys to the car and the gun away from Raymond, Margaret is saved by a wad of Benjamin Franklins (not that she had to die, on the contrary) and Ted Waters' case is all too easily discarded.

All in all, a fun and at times heartwarming 'reworking' of 'Fargo' (1996), but a little too flawed story-wise to be anything close to a masterpiece.

A good 7 out of 10.
