As Good As It Gets

This film is so incredibly cast after reading the book. A movie you can watch 20 times and still pick up things you missed previously. Might be a cliche, but "they sure don't make them like they used to".

A movie worth watching for its parts rather than its whole. ;)

The Big Sleep starts in very sprightly fashion, with Bogart as private detective Philip Marlowe, the youngest daughter of the rich house he is visiting for the current case (Martha Vickers) and then the girl's invalid father, all terrific. After this his initial meeting with Bacall is an anticlimax. Later some real heat develops between them but only in one memorable scene. He has a great scene with Dorothy Malone and some sparkling dialogue, more really good scenes with Martha Vicker, but unfortunately there is too much talk (and plot) in the movie and the other actors, though good (Elisha Cook Jnr. aside who is better) are not great enough for it. So well worth a watch but not for the story but for scenes, dialogue and about 5 performances. Set decoration is also very good and the recurrent use of various guns hidden in prepared holders in Marlowe/Bogart's glove compartment is amusing. I will watch it again though.

This movie is not entirely true to the novel "The Big Sleep" by Raymond Chandler, it dragged out some lines from the book, but done very badly;maybe this is because I have read the book and hearing it from someone else sounds phoney. Anyway there were other things I didn't like, for instance the Phillip Marlowe character is not the Phillip Marlowe from Chandlers creation, the movie version makes him come off as a James Bond type womaniser, in the books he is just not like that . Also there is a scene in the movie where he leads a man to his death intentionally, Marlowe is not the sadistic type, he does not enjoy killing or seeing people killed. He would rather see justice done by the law if anything. Another thing they left out was the greatest scene in the whole book, where Carmen tries to kill Marlowe, such a wasted opportunity. Also all the characters where very shallow on screen and I feel like they could have been portrayed better or even true to the novel had the movie been directed and written with more thought.
