Endearingly fresh, but wobbly

Big Sick has a lot going for it. It took the tired old boy-meats-girl story and added a big ethnic kick to it which made it endearingly fresh. There's also a lot of unpredictability in it. And when the boy loses the girl, he almost really loses her. The scenes with Kumail's family were by far my favorite. I also loved his scenes with Emily's parents. Oddly next to all those the relationship at the center of the movie felt kind of bland, even boring. I had a hard time buying the big reciprocal love between them. It didn't make sense that Emily, a psychology grad student at the one of the nation's top universities, would be this shocked and upset to learn about Kumail's difficulties with his family and them attempting to force him into an arranged marriage. Unless, perhaps, she wasn't all that into him in the first place. The dialogue, especially among the younger actors sometimes felt like improv and not in a good way - more raw than natural. All in all, there was a lot I liked, specifically lot of scenes I liked, but there was something wobbly in the way they all came together and I just couldn't love the end result.

The romantic comedy for people who hate romantic comedies.

I hate romantic comedies. I never watch them, I hate them so much. My daughters sometimes rope me into watching them, if I do. I decided to give this one a whirl because I watched NBC Sunday Morning and they interviewed the real couple and real family, and I thought they were all just lovely people, and liked it that it was a true story of a love affair. I think my main complaint with romantic comedies is that they're so fake, right? The film was wonderful. Any bad reviews here are just people who don't like reality vs Hollywood love. I laughed so much I cried. The main characters are so likeable and so charming in their own imperfect ways, basically it's like hanging out with friends for an hour. I guess some people don't relate to having relationships with family and friends that are searingly honest, and that might run people the wrong way. But for me, it is my preferred mode of communication, with my friends, so I related. Nothing compares to having friends and family that you can rip on in one moment and cry to the next. Of course main character Kamale has to learn that. Emily was played so perfectly. Her family was another treat. Played beautifully by veteran actors. I mean the actress who plays her mom, never gets a part wrong. She is one of the best actresses in Hollywood and not used enough. You see here her range. She looks fantastic too. I think she looks better now then she did when she was young. All in all, this is a delightful homage to a lasting love that turned out all right. I just really don't want to ever hear they get divorced. In real life! It doesn't follow the same Hollywood pattern that we are used to. It doesn't attempt to make the characters Hollywood perfect either, and it still manages to charm the pants off of us. Really the laughs alone, are every minute, and I wouldn't recommend watching with a sleeping baby in the room. You'll wake them up! I vote 10 stars. Don't listen to the haters, unless of course you're a hater. Or one of those romantic comedy people that need people and plots to follow a BUnch of rules. All the rules are broken here for formulaic comedy, and relationships. This is a love story for rebels. Haha.

Worth a Watch

I first heard of Kumail Nanjiani when Silicon Valley started. Since then I made an effort to catch a few of his appearances on podcasts and stand up specials. When I first heard he was in an upcoming movie I suspected a light comedy. When I heard more about the movie I learned the basic plot and wasn't sure what to make of it. I finally got around to actually watching the movie over the weekend. I really enjoyed it. I found myself cringing and laughing at the same time. Definitely worth a watch.
