Good Father/Daughter Chemistry Solidifies Standard Action

Vince Vaughn and Hailee Steinfeld elevate a Routine Action-Drama with some Good Father-Daughter Chemistry that keeps this one going when the Narrative lapses with Clunky Connections and Uninspired Storytelling.

Slightly Above Average Time-Filler that has a Major Distraction of Familiar Actors with so little Screen Time that Draws Attention and not in a good way. The Idea of peppering the Picture with Recognizable "Names" only to be Woefully abandon and Never to be Seen Again is a Decision of Questionable Consideration.

It's a rather Charming Exercise Otherwise. Vaughn is a Likable Dad that all but Abandon His Daughter but is shown to be More Involved in Her Life than She realized. Keeping in the Shadows, He is now forced to Intervene, because She is in Danger from some Criminals. His Criminal Ways have caught up and now both are caught up between Drug Lords and Corrupt Cops.

It's a Good Turn for Vaughn although His Recent Outing in HBO's Second Season of "True Detective" preceded this "Straight" Role and Impressed. Hailee Steinfeld Steals some Scenes and the Two are Tasked to bring down Bill Paxton's Cop that is a Slime-Ball. Paxton pulls the Character off quite well.

Overall the Domestic Drama is what Emerges as Significant and the Constant Peril is the Vehicle that motivates the Interaction and together it makes for some Entertainment that is Worth a Watch.

Planning

Apart from Vince Vaughn (who is almost unrecognizable at first glimpse), there are a couple of other people in this you may have heard of. First and foremost even if it's only a small role, it's his (Swingers) buddy Jon Favreau. But all of the talent combined does not do the trick with this movie right here.

It's almost a shame, but apart from being unoriginal, it's not really that touching as you may suspect. Which is a shame, because the daughter in distress and the criminal father always has promises. Some can be fulfilled, so it's not a complete wreck, but you may find it hard to actually care for the main characters much. And that is a bumper to say the least

Hiding in plain sight

Nick Barrow (Vince Vaughn) plans heists and then sells the plans, an occupation I didn't know existed. When the robbers get killed, Nick realizes he was set up and a number of people come looking for him. He becomes concerned about his estranged teen daughter Cate (Hailee Steinfeld). Yes he does take out a life insurance policy and then we never hear about it again until the very end. Nick goes on the run with his daughter, who develops a love-hate moody teen relationship with dad.

Nick is no Liam Neeson, although he can get the upper hand by using his head. Cate quickly learns from dad as this becomes a heart warming crime drama with the promise of a better sequel, should they opt to go that way. Hailee Steinfeld did an excellent job. Soft 4 stars

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.
