Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street

Musical genre has always been the heart of a theatre play or act and not so much in a film except some exceptions probably because not everyone gets it right but this time it has arrived, the long last wait of the musical film that we all deserved. Sweeney Todd is the darkest project ever by Tim; that is saying a lot considering his history, and the best one too for the first time the movie gives enough work to the audience to mesmerize them. Tim Burton has matured himself as a director far better than probably anyone for his execution is dot perfect along with editing and also a more reasonable world to settle in. Johnny Depp as always gives his heart to Tim and this time he deserved this movie where every side of him is visible as clear as a crystal; he is a revelation in it with a great supporting cast like Alan Rickman. Sweeney Todd isn't goofy or even peculiar considering its premise but sharply to the point with smart writing, horrifying characters and sketchy tone that breeds the darkest phase in a human life with stellar performances.

Depp and Burton - A Match Made In Heaven

Like Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are a match made in heaven. Period.

Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp)'s a barber who was sent on a penal transportation after a false charge was laid against him by Judge Turnip (Alan Rickman), who wants his wife. He's back to London after 15 years with one goal in mind-revenge.

Johnny Depp's performance is a tour-de-force. Oscar-worthy. He plays his character with such finesse, and it's just fantastic to watch him on-screen. The rest of the cast has also brought their A-game with them. Like all other Tim Burton movies, this movie is a technical marvel. The settings, the visuals, the atmosphere, the cinematography and all other technical aspects are flawless. Stephen Sondheim's score is wonderful too.

That brings me to the vocal performances of the cast- What I love about musicals is that, actors who are generally not professional singers, have to convey their emotion with singing, to the best of their ability, albeit not perfect at times. It's a real challenge for them, and I highly commend their hardwork. Every actor has sung convincingly in Sweeney Todd, there was hardly a falter in that department.

Not every musical gets it right. At times, the singing and the lines don't go together, and the end product sounds weird and a bit "off".This movie slightly suffers from that , with one scene, at the start, which I found very infuriating to watch. Apart from that, the rest of the movie is filled with fantastic dialogues and songs. There's another great opening credits scene, which we've come to expect from Tim Burton. The story isn't your average "run of the mill" revenge thriller. There are a few surprises awaiting at the end.

Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street is a MUST watch for everyone who doesn't find musicals weird.

Shave and a Haircut.

Tim Burton and I have a rough past. I've admired some of his dark/quirky films that spark from the most creative of places (Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride), while I've thoroughly detested some of the others (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland). He's a director who's unique touch hasn't always hit the mark. But Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a career high point. It is his bloodiest, darkest film to date and it is nearly his best. If you've noticed, my soft spot for musicals continues.. I honestly can't explain. Adapting from Steven Sondheim's genius Broadway creation, Sweeny Todd comes alive. Johnny Depp is electric. His performance here is tied with his portrayal of Hunter S. Thompson as his all-time best. He was born to sing, quite frankly. All of the others shine from Carter, to Cohen to the late Alan Rickman. The lyrics shake you to the core and the imagery shocks you as it cascades in blood. Sweeney Todd is a cut above the rest (rimshot).
