The Enterprise is trapped inside of a giant mechanical sphincter!

This movie is completely nonsensical and ridiculous. The absurdity begins with Commander Sonak being introduced as the Enterprise's new science officer shortly before suffering a gruesome death in a creepy ass transporter effect. Later as the Enterprise departs the solar system, they just happen to do so during a rare alignment of all the planets. Almost immediately, the Enterprise gets caught in the only wormhole in the Star Trek universe with a quantum level oscillation delay effect, but they escape by blowing up an asteroid within it. When the Enterprise encounters the cloud, it somehow becomes the only vessel who's shields withstand a blast of its plasma energy. Moments before the second plasma torpedo hits, it simply vanishes after the Enterprise transmits linguacode. Once the enterprise enters the cloud, it gets stopped by a giant sphincter which puckers up every few seconds, It is then that Spock discovers that with just a blank stare on his face and not even looking at his monitors, he can gather facts not only about V'ger, but an entire mechanical civilization on the other side of the galaxy as well. At the end when V'Ger's true nature is revealed, the audience is treated to a series of loud fart-like sounds every time an absurd plot twist is revealed while Kirk looks around as if wondering where they came from. The purpose for those ugly belt devices the crew wears is never explained either, but I imagine they are "reward" devices similar to the one in Suburban Commando.

Despite all its flaws, annoyances and the fact that it's an obvious rip-off of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Trek: The Motion Picture is still much more watchable than any of the Next Generation or reboot films. The original cast always had great chemistry and the special effects combined with the orchestral music is relaxing to watch, even if it does drag the movie on far too long.

A Good Star Trek Film

Star Trek: The Motion Picture may not be great by most people, but I thought the movie was pretty good. It also depends on the version of film people watch. I grew up with the theatrical cut, the special longer cut, and the Special Directors Edition cut.

To make a simple summary of the film without spoiling for those who haven't seen it. A mysterious space cloud is heading towards Earth and only the crew of the USS Enterprise can stop it.

The positive thing I can say about the film is that I love the acting by the actors involved, some of the special effects, and Jerry Goldsmith's music. I own a record album of the soundtrack inherited from my parents.

I still consider this worth watching.

Star Trek Rough Start

The pressure was on to do something great and pressure does strange things to people, places and things. Coal can turn into a diamond under pressure but the pressure here to turn out a hit using the success of the series worked against it. We wanted to see the characters unleashed and free to do whatever they wanted based on what they previously did. The story lacked and I am surprised for this as the original series had so many unique and interesting stories to tell making one wonder why they didn't use one of those? Well they ended up realizing this afterwards and did just that. They took the episode "space Seed" and turned it into The Wrath of Khan for Star Trek # 2. Also getting a Director with a passion makes a difference too. Eventually the series itself found its footing and had all its positive ducks lined up and did a nice run. Of course they had to end it as the characters were aging terribly. They left us in good condition however. When I first saw this, I was a Trekkie so I endured it to the end. But this is not a movie you would see again because it has no memorable scenes. Good snack movie with a tasty drink and if you want to visit with this please do because after all, it is a Star Trek movie and that makes it okay
