Plot summary

A comedic drama about a group of people (and several robots) living on a space station in a 1970’s-version of the future. When a new Assistant Captain arrives, she inadvertently ignites tensions among the crew, prompting them to confront their darkest secrets. Barely contained lust, jealousy, and anger all bubble to the surface, becoming just as dangerous as the asteroid that’s heading right for them.

Retro in Space

Set in space, but not very much science-fiction. More of a Collection of stories about the dysfunctional relationships among the crew of the station. Not surprisingly, the status of the station could also best be described by dysfunctional.

Although set in space, the technology used is very much based on technology either from the 70s or 70s sci-fi shows. And that is the best part. There are some good jokes in there, but the best part is a mix of nostalgia in recognizing the old gadgets long obsolete, and jokes based upon them.

Unfortunately, the story doesn't quite manage to tie it all together. The story led up to a scene with all the major characters where a climatic ending could be set up. However, it just lets go leaving most of the threads of stories lose. I felt a little bit cheated out of the ending. A good ending could have recovered much, now I think the movie average at best. Mildly entertaining but nothing that I will remember long.

no funny

Jessica (Liv Tyler) arrives as the new pilot for the space station 76. Captain Glenn (Patrick Wilson) is suicidal and not happy with the insisting female newcomer. Ted (Matt Bomer) is unhappy with his marriage to Misty (Marisa Coughlan) and grows closer to Jessica.

The concept of a 70's space station is intriguing. Other than that, there is nothing here. First and foremost, this is not funny. It starts with the robo gyno. It's odd but not actually funny. There is no written joke in that scene. At least, there is no good written joke. It's cold. Ok! Is that supposed to be funny? Is any of this actually funny? Did anybody actually write any actual jokes? Add to it is the straightest acting from straight man Liv Tyler. There is a lot of straight acting from the lead straight men. This movie is a little weird but it is mostly a lot of nothing.

MY SECRET IS...

The film seems to be based on the game Asteroids as the main function of our 1976 Space Station is to avoid asteroids. In this film, the music and style is that of the 70's including the use of VHS tapes and Viewmasters. LTCMDR Jessica Marlow (Liv Tyler) boards the space station and works with Captain Glenn (Patrick Wilson). There is a diverse crew with families as their lives are a bad soap opera. The plot really goes nowhere as they created this metaphor and just couldn't do anything with it. Liv Tyler tells us the metaphor in the beginning that asteroids know their place in the universe and individuals who change have trouble finding their place with the trick is avoiding collisions. The characters are all shallow, perhaps by design.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, sex, nudity (Anna Sophia Berglund)
