Not a bad B-movie action film

SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE is a decent enough action B-movie made as a collaboration between America and Russia. The ensemble cast is enough to keep you watching this one, even though the story isn't up to much. The tale sees a bunch of rich thrill-seekers going on a pretend mission in which they dress up as soldiers and engage in mock battles, only to discover that they're soon fighting for their lives.

This film suffers from the usual trappings of the B-movie genre. There's plentiful action here but it can feel a bit repetitive and not particularly well staged; the cheapness always comes through. This is where the cast comes in. Christian Slater seems to have been re-invented as an action hero lately and has a shirtless scene here in which he shows off his muscular chest. Sean Bean fits his role like a glove and is typically great. Dominic Monaghan is loud, brash, and has a heart (no stretch, then). James Cromwell is old timer bizarrely wheeled out one last time, and Ving Rhames is a delight as the African arms smuggler. Colm Meaney's villain is all ham but there you go; when watching this film, just remember it could be (and often is) a lot, lot worse.

lots of big time actors in weak B-movie

American soldiers Captain Craig McCenzie (Christian Slater) and Mike Reed (Freddy Rodriguez) crossed CIA agent Carter Mason (Colm Meaney) and get run out of the military for it. They are recruited as protection for an unusual project. A private company offers rich amateur patrons the opportunity to be real soldiers of fortune. In eastern Europe, a military dictator has taken control of an island with the help of Mason. The rich customers are metals magnate Roman St John (Sean Bean), arms dealer Grimaud Tourneur (Ving Rhames), video game designer Tommy Sin (Dominic Monaghan), and telcom CEO Sam Haussmann (James Cromwell).

There are great award-winning actors involved in this. That is the only compelling aspect because this movie is unrelenting B-movie. I don't know how much money they paid to lure these great actors to do a bad movie. The production is weak. The style is weak and old. There is nothing these great actors could do to save this.

Surprisingly entertaining

I almost didn't watch this movie, because even though I do like Christian Slater a lot his recent movies have for the most of them not been that great.

ASSASSIN'S RUN (2012), PLAYBACK (2012), THE POWER OF FEW (2013) and STRANDED (2013) were flat out horrible, so imagine my surprise when I turned this on with a rating of 4.3/10 on here and I found myself actually enjoying it!

I mean sure it's flawed in logic and the characters are a little one- dimensional BUT it's good b-movie popcorn entertainment and sometimes that's all you need.

A pretty impressive list of cast as well, Christian Slater is joined by Ving Rhames, James Cromwell, Colm Meany, Sean Bean, Dominic Monaghan and Freddy Rodriguez... And although perhaps none of them make their finest performances of their lifetimes they do seem like they enjoyed making the movie, even Christian Slater (!) and it got some good kills and explosions etc so I can't complain about the visuals either.

So yeah overall, nothing that will blow you away but dumb good fun regardless.
