Not quite as good as I thought

I think this was a decent movie, but I wouldn't really say it was one of the best video game adaptations as a lot of people seem to think. Then again, the bar is set really low for that. What turned me off about this movie was the CGI. It really seemed off model at times. Then again, I haven't played the "Resident Evil" games so I can't really compare it too well. It's still the best "Resident Evil" movie I've ever seen. I thought this would focus on Raccoon City but it's actually somewhere place. If I knew more about the games, I would understand this.

At least the name "Clare Redfield" is familiar to me. There are still really creative things going on in this. The best is probably the monster Justin turns into at the end. I admit it's a bit clichéd with how he fights from the inside, but it's still very well done. I found this to be a pretty realistic movie. The zombie virus manages to be contained. The two main characters do not end up in the end, but of course they could always someday. The dialogue is pretty good even if it's not great. ***

Lifeless, unemotional characters

Spoiler-free review (except who the 2-3 main characters are, no surprise)

The characters in this movie are as artificial and lifeless as the CGI graphics, at least Leon. There is no emotional connection between Leon and Claire after all they have gone through together in the RE 2 game. Leon has no emotions as all. I like him in the game RE 2 & 4, but here he is so hollow, stiff and superficial, not a human being.

Claire is more authentic, but do you remember Sherry in RE 2? Guess what, in this movie she is babysitting again, but this time the little girl is Indian (or Black, I don't remember). So they copied the same subplot from RE 2, but just changed the race of Sherry. Wow, how creative. No, it's pathetic.

The only good thing that can be said about this movie is that the CGI graphics are very good. But that doesn't matter much, because we have a garbage story and a soulless main character. And the story is not a continuation of the games, in RE 4 we had no T-Virus anymore and now it's just the same old stuff with T-Virus again.

For gamers who like this movie: Stop sitting in your room and go outside, interact with real human beings. You will see the difference between real humans and these unemotional CGI characters here.

Better than the live action movies.

But is it better than the games? No. The games are better, especially Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3. But this animated movie is better than the live action movies starring Milla Jovovich. It has a decent plot, it adds to the story of the universe of the games and original characters are used. I like that. Well, to be honest, I was a little disappointed at first when I watched it the first time. I felt the tone of the movie was too lighthearted in comparison to the games. I also felt it was kind of confused with what genre it wanted to be. It wasn't horror, it wasn't action, it wasn't thriller or drama. But I now think it was for the better since it was a bit of everything. But that is also what makes it come across kind of short, its general lack of focus in what it wanted to be. At least it had enough crazy Resident Evil moments like the air plane crashing into the airport terminal, Leon kicking ass and Claire being sexy without being completely helpless but also not being invulnerable with a convincing vulnerability to satisfy me. Claire might be my favorite character in the RE series, but I am also fond of Jill.

Some of the other characters were just mostly annoying, like senator Ron Davis and the partner of Angela Miller but it added some color to the movie, at least. I thought Angela Miller was an interesting addition of characters, but it also made it a little too cliché since her brother Curtis Miller was the antagonist. Leon and Claire is in it, Angela's brother Curtis injects himself with the G-Virus. Sounds familiar? Right, Resident Evil 2. It brings along familiarity, but it also give the feeling of there might have been some laziness concerning the writing. Or they might have been afraid of making the story too unfamiliar, I do not know. But anyway, I like the animation. It is not the best but I like it more than Pixar since it has some adult themes and it is better than the live action movies. Despite the few complaints and mixed feeling towards the movie, I feel mostly positive about it. I also like how the characters interact and of course indulging myself when Claire is on screen. The zombies were OK by the way, not really scary but hey, they are still zombies.
