Not your 90's Power Rangers

I have to say for taking a 90's Saban tv show and turning it into a somewhat deep story line for kids and adults alike was a hard task for the production team. I think they did quite well, they have a pretty unique cast of characters for a lot of people to identify with. Anyone stating the 90's show was a ripoff they don't understand the US syndication and that it was done with permission (SMH) Back to the movie! It was awesome that they added a power ranger with autism and made alpha to be more than an aye yay yay! robot. I think it was an above standard reboot, who ever thought they would cry in power rangers movie? When I went to see this in theaters it was full of adult coming back for the nostalgia and was buzzing with energy in the room. When the credits rolled there was clapping and buzz words left and right. I hope they do make this into a series. It was cool to see the kids progress and grow and finally morph. Bad ass fight scenes and great graphics were also a great touch.

Better Than Expected

Power Rangers is directed by Dean Israelite and follows some troubled teens that find themselves brought together by fate when they find stones that give them superpowers that they use to fight a greater enemy. As this plot progressed, I thought this film was going to be rough. The teens felt cliché and the dialogue between some of the rangers was awful, but after the fist act, the film began to take off.

The film moved smoothly and never seem to bog down. The action sequences were nothing special, but were entertaining and were executed pretty well. The film definitely could have just tried to stuff humor in each scene, but the humor and lighthearted moments felt natural and appropriate when these moments happened. The character development is surprisingly good and the film does a great job of growing the bond between the rangers in a very believable way. Although, some of the characters don't feel as fleshed out as others do. One of the rangers had autism and the film didn't go over the top with this. It was approached in a rather subtle and realistic way that I really appreciated as someone who has a brother with autism. The acting in this film was good, but nothing great, which is kind of expected in a film like this. The lore of Power Rangers is used effectively and that's why the moments in the film that paid homage to the franchise felt like they worked.

This film had multiple target audiences. With all the target audiences, came multiple tones during the film, which made the film feel all over the place at times.

Overall, I thought this film was good. It brings a fresh and welcomed twenty seventeen feel to a film that has decent acting, solid characters, good effects, and manages to portray autism through a main character in a very realistic and effective way. This film definitely has some negatives. It has an extremely rough first act that accounts for most of its moments of pure cringe and suffers tone changes. Everything was just good and nothing really stood out to me as great and that's why I would give this movie a: 7.2/10
