Fun family entertainment

Larry Daley needs to get a job quickly if his ex-wife is to allow him to keep seeing his son; he finds a job working as the night-watchman at a New York museum. It turns out that it is no ordinary museum; each night all of the exhibits come to life! This means he has to contend with a rampaging T-Rex skeleton, assorted animals, Attila the Hun as well as miniature cowboys and Romans who want to fight each other. He does get some help though; from a waxwork of Teddy Roosevelt. He learns that the strange goings on are due to a valuable Egyptian tablet. After his first night he is ready to quit but doesn't because of his son; after the second he is almost fired then on the third night he invites his son to see his work… this will be his toughest night yet as he must unite the living exhibits to thwart a robbery.

This film is good harmless fun that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. The story is fun with plenty of laughs and a tension without being too scary. There is no offensive material beyond the sight of a monkey urinating on Larry. The special effects are really rather good making it easy to suspend disbelief and accept that everything has come to life. Ben Stiller does a fine job as Larry, a believable ordinary man caught up in an extraordinary situation. He gets fine support from Robin Williams as Roosevelt; and plenty of other familiar actors including Dick Van Dyke, Steve Coogan, Owen Wilson and Ricky Gervais amongst others. Overall I'd say that I enjoyed this more than I would and would recommend it to anybody wanting some family friendly entertainment.

How does this have 6.4 stars?

How does this have 6.4 stars? It's way better than IMDb people say it is! Alright, a lot of movies on IMDb are better than the ratings. But this should be in the range of 7 stars. Sure, there are some gross or dumb jokes. Sure, it's not like a Marvel movie with an action or leveled plot. Sure, it has a cliché my-parents-are-divorced-so-I-don't- trust-my-dad thing. But just ignore that and you'll enjoy it! The animation, acting, and characters make it a great movie.

A comedy of historical proportions.

This film is a very entertaining family comedy in which Larry Daley, a man overthrown by divorce and successive career failures, manages to be admitted as a night watchman at the Natural History Museum in New York without knowing that everything in the museum comes to life at night. The idea is original but it certainly has passed through the minds of many fans of history who love to visit museums and feel like seeing the story come to life and happen before their eyes. And, in fact, most museums should gain more life and stop being just empty spaces, with showcases, exposed objects, dead things or old stones. People want to be in a museum who harmoniously combines culture, education and family fun. This movie "explores" these ideas to create a funny story where a night guard, naturally unprepared, is caught unaware by the abnormal nocturnal activity of the space that he must watch. There is a certain scent of adventure mixed with good jokes and first-class situational humor. Larry's attempts to keep things under control and the fights between some historical figures are great moments of humor. Among the actors, Ben Stiller naturally dominates all. Until I saw him working here, I considered him someone of little value, just another guy trying to be funny in stupid movies. Now I recognize that I may have been unjust in that judgement. Actors cannot be blamed for bad material that is given to them and can only shine when their has material that allow them to do so. That was Stiller's case in this movie. Also brilliant were veterans Dick Van Dyke and Mickey Rooney, in roles of villains. Carla Gugino, Ricky Gervais, Robin Williams, Steve Coogan and Owen Wilson make up the core of the supporting cast and have the time and opportunity to give their best. A great movie to watch in family and just laugh without worries.
