Fun and friendly

Before I watched this, I was hesitant. Monsters vs. Aliens? What?! No thanks. But I saw it anyway and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's cute and clever, being a great family movie. There's plenty of comedy for both adults and children. Though there are a few rude jokes, the good ones rule them out. The plot is sometimes clever, sometimes cliché. I don't have much else to say. This is an enjoyable, fun, cute, and friendly must-see for the entire family, and definitely the sort worth watching again.

Aliens Vs. Monsters.

Catching up on them during the Christmas holiday,I found DreamWorks non-franchise films to have a unique, quirky atmosphere. Finding it to surprisingly not be shown on TV during X-Mas,I was happy to recently spot the movie being shown, which led to me seeing the Monsters Vs. Aliens fight.

The plot:

Just before she is to get married Susan Murphy gets hit by a meteorite. Surviving the hit,Murphy starts growing to 50ft high. Rushing to stop more of the public from seeing her,the military knocks Murphy out. Waking up,Murphy finds herself locked in a secret government facility with Dr. Cockroach P.H.D., B.O.B. and Missing Link, who tell Murphy about the battle between Aliens and Monsters.

View on the film:

Flying over the 50's Creature Feature Sci-Fi era,co-writers/(with Maya Forbes/Wallace Wolodarsky/Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger) directors Rob Letterman (who moved to live action with Goosebumps) and Conrad Vernon pay loving tribute to the era with bold characters whose primary-coloured,big eyes design helping the bright blue and green monsters slither into action.

Landing on an unexpectedly quiet note for the final, the directors land the fight scenes with a mighty crunch, thanks to a sharp eye for scale allowing the viewer to follow the monsters stomp round the peaceful cities. Filling the alien spaceships with lively performances from Seth Rogen and Hugh Laurie in a tantalising playground, the writers disappointingly stay away from picking up everything that the setting offer, due to the focus on Murphy leading to the other monsters and aliens feeling oddly normal,in a battle that is far from being the war of the worlds.

On the surface, it may appear clichéd but it's still very good

Some people may not like Monsters vs. Aliens due to its references to B-movies, its corny jokes, and its simplistic characters. I was a little annoyed by B.O.B.'s idiocy and the other monsters are quite stereotypical but I wouldn't let that bring me down from enjoying the film.

I thought that the character of Susan was really pretty and wasn't some sassy brat like some women are. She was sympathetic even to the alien. Though, I did have problems with her design, her nose was small and her eyes were big bug eyes.

The team put in a lot of effort into the animation, making it turn out striking.

The person who voiced Susan did a pretty good job with her character. She put a lot of emotion into her voice. And I also liked the person who voiced the other characters, too. They did a pretty good job of making them humorous and trying to capture their personalities.

The dialogue on the other hand, is archetypal, though. Especially at the beginning. Once the story gets going, the movie gets way better and quite interesting.

The movie was too short, it stopped at a cliffhanger. I wished they could've made a sequel of the movie from there. Also, there was not enough character development to Susan and her adjustment of being with the new monsters. Her finally knowing she doesn't need Derek felt a bit forced. But it had a lot of heart and action and some soul but not enough.

While it's not as great as Shrek, it's still a good movie with high replay value and your kids will probably love it. The little ones might get bored but the older ones will love it. It was a very memorable experience to me and I think it would be a valuable film for the kids. It had a special place in my heart when I was a kid and words couldn't describe how much I loved the film. And Susan is still one of my favorite cartoon characters and I still really liked this movie.
