Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund, Mark Wahlberg, the screenwriter from Body of Lies directing, all together in a crime thriller film. How is this movie not on par with Cloverfield. The script for one thing.
Is this movie a dark revenge thriller, a psychological thriller. I don't think this movie knows what it wants to be, so my two cents is that the director made it up as he went along.
The story centres on Hedlunds character travelling to the Mojave desert to commit suicide, until one night, he encounters a polar opposite, who has come to find a worthy victim. Being followed back into L.A., Hedlund's character needs to find a way to stop Isaac's character once and for all.
One of the synopsis' I found was, I kid you not, "two suicidal drifters head into the Mojave desert to end it all and come across each other. Their newfound friendship will help each other fight back against their depression", now THAT would have been a worthy story to cover, I would wanna see that. But then I remembered the movie poster and I knew there was something fishy about it, and my suspicions weren't wrong. It's not garbage, but it's also what I call the "Hide and Seek" of crime thriller films; just something the actors did for a pay check, and hopefully they've scrubbed it from their resume. I'm really disappointed. Maybe I should read multiple synopsis' and trailers before I watch the film.
I'll give it a 5 out of 10

A famous Hollywood director is feeling dissatisfied with his life, the issues in it including the disintegration of his marriage which will probably end with an expensive divorce and loss of custody of his young daughter. To get away from his life if only for a short period, he drives into the Mojave Desert. The getaway doesn't turn out the way he expects, the major turning point being when a sociopathic drifter stumbles into his camp. That encounter ends up with both men seemingly wanting to kill the other. What the director is unaware of is that the drifter, who didn't know who he was during their encounter, ends up finding out who he is and about his life, which makes him an easier target once the director returns to Los Angeles. The drifter seemingly wants to torture the director by threats of harm against the director's friends, associates and/or loved ones, including his current girlfriend, a French actress, regardless of if the threats are real or just used as that ...
