"He was one of a kind"

A tile like 'Maniac Cop' should be an indicator of low quality but this film even though low budget is surprisingly good. A disgruntled ex-cop thought deceased is killing people in New York but it is not as simple as that. Who he is and why he is killing are eventually explained which involves the justice system, the penal system and ideas of trust and betrayal. There is a lot in the film and it moves along briskly with good character scenes and exciting action scenes. The last stunt is amazing. When the city realises there is a killing cop the paranoia of the population is well portrayed.

The cast acquit themselves excellently, particularly Tom Atkins as policeman Frank McCrae, William Smith as Captain Ripley and Sheree North as Sally Noland. Robert Z'Dar as the titular cop is frightening, even in silhouette standing still. Bruce Campbell plays an adulterous cop who is accused of the crimes. Apparently the actor disliked the film but what does he know? He is fine in it.

It's not really a slasher film, it's not a monster film, it's not a police procedural film. The laudable direction by William Lustig and script by Larry Cohen makes it rather a good drama and more engrossing than many a bigger budgeted thriller. There were sequels but was definitely the best one.

An enjoyable 80s horror flick

This was pleasing, a bit unusual but still quite fun to watch. I love the cast for this movie, Bruce Campbell, Tom Atkins and Robert Z'Dar. They are all cult movie icons and this movie plays an important part in that.

The best parts are the action and gore scenes, mostly because its well made in that regard, however, the rest of the movie isn't bad. The director made "Maniac" years prior to this, and that was a great movie, it feels a little bit like "Maniac" at points, in the sense that the killer is creepy and the scenes filmed in the city look quite similar, but this one is way more cheesy.

Overall, a fun time that its perhaps a bit boring at times but keeps you invested with decent characters, enjoyable performances and some amusing kills.

No one want your dead more than the law

The 80s is a wild time when literally everything or everyone can be a serial killer even a cop.Begin with Matt Cordell a super cop after being wrongly accused and sent to jail he come back as a unstoppable killing machine known as the Maniac Cop.On the path of revenge with blood of many innocence people the only hope left is two NYPD cop Frank McCrae played by Tom Atkins and Jack Forrest played by the man the legend himself Mr.Bruce Campbell. It a good fun horror movie that i enjoy a lot but there one things really bugging me that although Maniac Cop is very strong but he still a human so how the hell in one scene he getting shot multiple times but still alive.I guess the sequels will answer me that
