Obviously the writers know nothing about the military, if you've deployed, you might want to skip this

I saw this movie years ago and didn't think to write a review. However, I came across it once again while trying to watch something on a lazy day. I would have liked this a lot more if they had just done some research or talked to a vet. The inconsistencies killed it for me. The plot centers around a small family in a small town somewhere (I think ) in the south. Young mom is a former addict, dad is a mechanic at the local garage and a Marine reservist, they have a young son. The dad and boy do a thing where they rap or sing or something like that. The dad eventually gets called to deploy. This is where the problems start. Apparently, everyone associated with this movie believes that when a Marine gets deployed, he/she doesn't get payed. The writer hasn't heard of BAQ, VHA, or basic pay during wartime (which incidentally doesn't get taxed). Oh, and let's not forget danger pay. The reason I mention these is because it becomes relevant in the later part of the movie. I'll explain: once the dad is deployed, we begin seeing the little family have a hard time, they have no money for the mortgage, food, etc. She loses the house has to move back into the trailer park with her abusive father and ends up back on drugs. This entire plot line killed the movie for me! What was the dad doing? Going to the goat club and making it rain in Afghanistan? Just a ridiculous premise, entirely. This is the meat and potatoes of the entire movie! The ending comes in a M. Knight Shyamalan type twist, so I won't reveal it. Just see it for yourself. This could have been an ok movie but the plot-holes just killed it for me.

I came into this movie part way through so close to the end was a big surprise. A feel good but poignant movie. A fine tribute to service men and women who have paid a high price for defending freedom. Watch to the very end, if you aren't moved you don't have a heart. If you are looking for lots of action this is not the one for you. If, however. You want to be entertained and enjoy music, this is a perfect fit. There are negative reviews but overlook those, just give it a chance, I doubt you'll be sorry. Maybe no academy acting awards but I thought the ssad was pretty decent and the mom looked like a lot of crackheads I've seen. Fast forward if it goes too slow but wait for the big surprise, worth the wait

The Good and the Bad

I happened across this film while looking through Amazon Prime movies to stream. I was impressed that so many reviewers gave this movie raves - and I had never heard of it. It was released straight to DVD.

Whatever the criticism of the film, the production values are fine. It's not a glossy expensive production but the acting is good and the story is clear and well-told. It's not terrifically clever and the dialogue doesn't sparkle.

That's the Bad.

The Good is what so many amazon reviewers stressed about this movie: it is not an honest portrayal of one little-known aspect of the military family's life, it is not a peek into the seedier sexier side of the wife left behind when her husband is deployed, it is not a display of the hidden rage felt by the members of a family when they react to hard knocks. In short: it's not 'modern' enough to grab the attention of critics.

Instead, it somehow has captured and delivered a portrait of feelings, which is what people want to see, need to see. That can be done simply. That doesn't have to be graphic scenes. The music may not be to your tastes, the Christian cast may not be to your taste, there may be many things in this story that you find boring - financial stress, for example.

It's well worth watching. It's not eye candy and it's not great literature on the script page, it's story-telling.
