Soundtrack for this movie is one of the first CDs I got and one of the most worn out ones. But it took me more than two decades to finally see the movie too. I suppose I was dodging it because of pretty much bad reviews and, once again, I missed the good movie. OK, it's not masterpiece, but for an action drama it is above average. And music kicks ass!

Still a thrill ride with great actors and an unmatched soundtrack

To younger viewers maybe an oldie, but (still) a goody. I have loved the movie since when it came out - what's not to love? It has Emilio Estevez, Denis Leary, Cuba Gooding, Erik Schrody, Michael deLorenzo AND Stephen Dorff (also check out S.F.W.) etc. (Peter Greene, Angela Alvarado) in it, in my eyes it is ultra-suspenseful (the second Purge-installment Anarchy reminded me a bit of it, but you can enjoy Jud. nig. without the politics/ the clich├ęd "the rich are all secret mass murderers" BS), it is funny at times, and it has a killer soundtrack (still great/never paralleled). If you wanna have a fun night, a video night/party, some thrilling entertainment with eye AND ear candy - then this is the movie to watch (an alternative would be Boondock Saints, but you won't have the same perfect soundtrack then). The only thing I did not like about it back then and still do not like is the wife of Emilio Estevez's character - a stereotype of the annoying, square, bitchy shrew, esp. since there are so few females in the movie anyway, but fortunately her role is very short and rather insignificant, but yet: dear writers, if you are dumb enough to marry such narrow-minded, petty bourgeois women then don't blame other/all the women for it later! There are many other women out there, it's not their fault you couldn't handle one with personality!!

basic B-movie plot

Frank Wyatt (Emilio Estevez) and Mike Peterson (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) are going out to a boxing match with Ray Cochran (Jeremy Piven) testing out his new RV. Frank's brother John (Stephen Dorff) is a last-minute addition. The foursome from the suburbs get stuck in traffic. They get off the highway and get lost in the bad side of town. They stop after thinking they ran over somebody. They bring Teddy into the RV and discover that he's been shot. A gang led by Fallon (Denis Leary) catches up to the disabled RV. After shooting Teddy, Fallon goes after the four wanting to leave no witnesses.

This is a basic B-movie plot. The main difference interestingly is that Leary leads an all white gang. It could have been much better if Fallon and his men are corrupt cops. It would raise the tension and Fallon can throw his weight around the locals. There is some overacting. It's a fine action B-movie. It isn't quite the same after going down into the sewers. The fake sewer location doesn't have the same intensity. The ladder across the buildings is probably the best section.
