I went through a windshield at four o'clock in the morning

Joe (Nicolas Cage) is your basic good man with a low snap point. He works a crew under the table for the logging company. He has his vices and everyone in this small rural community knows him. Gary (Tye Sheridan) is a fifteen year old "boy left behind" who has issues with his drunken lazy father incredibly portrayed by Gary Poulter. Joe attempts to help the boy out without getting involved, while helping out others...everyone but himself.

The film moves slow to build character and background material. The gritty drama far outweighs the action aspect. This is a film that reminded me of "Winterbone" where we see a piece of a Southern rural community sliced open.

Parental Guide: F-bomb. Brief sex and nudity (Sue Rock?)

Sick trash

This is easily the sickest, most disgusting piece of excrement that I have ever seen in my 65 years. I am not squeamish, but this film shamelessly exploited gratuitous violence and sleaziness and truly had no "redeeming social value". All of the director, producer and actors should be ashamed of having participated in this flaming abortion waste of time. This film showcased the worst in human nature and had no lessons for anyone except the hopelessly depraved.

I need at least three showers to wash this filth off of me.

Cage and Sheridan steal the show!!

An ex-con, who is the unlikeliest of role models, meets a 15-year-old boy and is faced with the choice of redemption or ruin. Joe was Nicolas Cage first critical success in 8 years the movie scored an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.9/10 in IMDb and to be honest i agree with IMDb in this one as good as the performances of Cage and Sheridan were the film had a very slow pacing, dumb moments such as Joe using his dog in order to take down another dog or Gary beating the crap out of Willie but for some reason he couldn't beat his father. The movie could have been better in certain points in some occasions or even use some of it's characters better now on the bright side like i said Cage and Sheridan have a nice chemistry together and the 3rd act is pretty good although i was feeling that something was going to happen in the end but overall not a complete disappointment but not a Masterpiece either. (7/10)
