Not just a wildlife documentary

Jane is not just a wildlife documentary about chimpanzees. It's about life, relationship, persistence, success, failure, love, death and nearly every aspects of life in most beautiful way you can imagine.

A very impressive, effective and soulful movie which no one should miss.

Respect Ms Jane Goodall.

Difference Maker

In 1957, Dr. Louis Leakey hires 26 year old secretary Jane Goodall to join his chimpanzee study. She had no experience or scientific degree. She travels to Gombe with her mother into the jungle. After many fruitless months, Jane is finally accepted into a chimpanzee group. Her discovery of tool making by the chimps would create an uproar and a change in the definition of mankind. National Geographic sends Hugo Van Lawick to film her exploits. They would marry and have son Grub.

It's a National Geographic doc about one of their own luminaries. Some people are famous for nothing. Some people have toiled in obscurity for something important. Jane Goodall has become famous for her persistent work with chimps and other creatures. She has made a difference in the world. This is a wonderful journey. It doesn't hurt that the young soft-spoken Jane contains the heart of a lion and the face of an angel. She is a role model for millions especially little girls. She is somebody who has lived a life. This is good standard documentary. The nature filming is impeccable. The early footage is amazing. It is compelling work.

A well-done summary of the subject

"Jane" is an American English-language documentary from 2017 and the most recent work by director Brett Morgen. This 90-minute film was nominated for a BAFTA and also considered a frontrunner for an Oscar for a while, but eventually it came pretty short, fif not even manage a nomination. It seems like the Academy does not really have it with primates these days as there was another documentary on this subject not too long ago that also came pretty short in Hollywood. Anyway, this one here focuses of course as the title already suggests on Jane Goodall, the renowned primatology scientist from London. She is in her mid-80s now (certainly looks younger), so it is kinda nice to see this film introduce her to this current generation who may not be too aware of her work anymore unfortunately. A big part of the film is of course about Goodall's work with the chimpanzees. But there is a lot more in here too, for example many many scenes with other animals too, or also a big amount (maybe too much?) of focus on Goodall's private life. I guess they did not want to stay under the 1.5-hour mark, but it's fine. It's nothing too bad really. The film is almost completely a collection of old recordings of Goodall during her work and we see how she is near chimpanzees, how she watches them, how she gives them names, how every one is basically unique in their own special ways and this goes on for decades until we see for example how these animals die at some point. And we find out about how her work had a major impact on her personal life too, for example her child and it's kinda funny we see the boy in a cage at some point where he was safe from the chimpanzees. And near the end you see why, you see that they are actually dangerous creatures that should not be underestimated because of their intelligence. There is a nice reference or quote near the end that of course they are that violent for why wouldn't they be with how genetically close they are to humans. I would not say that it was a great watch really, but it certainly was a good one and I recommend checking it out without hesitation. Goodall is still fascinating to watch without a doubt and I am glad she has reached such a high age. She deserved it for her resilient work on the subject of chimpanzees. It is also a really uplifting story for females because of who you can become and what an impact you can make in a field, even if you don't have a formal education. The obstacles she was facing because of her gender also play a crucial role on some occasions during this film. So yeah, I think Morgen did a pretty good job on getting in the right focus and make this a pretty informative piece of filmmaking that animal documentary lovers will certainly enjoy more than everybody else. I give it a thumbs-up and I think you should check it out.
