Not particularly thrilling

Interview with a Hit-man is a low budget British thriller with more than a nod to the Hit-man video game and subsequent film as well as THE BOURNE SUPREMACY. It stars straight-to-DVD star Luke Goss playing a former Romanian child who grew up to become a star hit-man and who arrives in UK ready to carry out his latest assignment. Things become complicated when he falls for his target.

I'm not sure why there are a wealth of positive reviews on this site because this is a very ordinary and uninteresting story. It's so low budget that there's hardly any action and those action bits that do occur are unconvincing. The story is full of dialogue which is softly-spoken and attempts to build character but it comes across as dull and just as uninteresting as the forays into action. Everything seems long-winded and unfocused and a reliably charming Goss can do nothing to carry the picture. It seems they gave up on this one before they even started.

Excellent Thriller

In England, the professional assassin Viktor (Luke Goss) tells the story of his life to a filmmaker since he was a bullied boy in the outskirt of Bucharest, Romania. His father owes money to the mafia and is threatened by enforcers. Viktor seeks a job with the mobster Sergei (Danny Midwinter) to make money but not to pay his father's debt. Soon his father is murdered by the mafia and Viktor is assigned to collect money from a man. Viktor kills the man and his wife and when he is ready to kill the two daughters, Sergei arrives and moves him to the city. Viktor learns how to become a cold blood and cruel hit man with Sergei and works for the Romanian kingpin Traficant (Stephen Marcus). During a drug purchase, the reckless son of Traficant, Franco (Ray Panthaki), kills the son of another mafia lord and Sergei is assigned to kill Viktor to cover up Franco's murder. However Viktor kills Sergei, simulates his own death and flees to London. Soon he is hired by a powerful mafia kingpin and Viktor saves a woman, Bethesda (Caroline Tillette), who is going to be raped by a gang in a coffee shop. She seduces him and they fall in love with each other. Sometime later, she is pregnant and Viktor decides to retire after resolving some loose ends in Romania. Then Viktor tells the filmmaker that Bethesda wants to meet him. What is the reason for the encounter?

"Interview with a Hit-man" is a surprisingly excellent thriller. This film is distributed on DVD in Brazil by a minor distributor and without marketing, it is a wonderful surprise for viewers that take the chance to see it. Luke Goss has a top-notch performance in the role of the cold-blood killer Viktor. Caroline Tillette is a lovely woman and Danny Midwinter is perfect in the role of Sergei. The screenplay is well written and surprises the viewer in the very end. Revenge is a dish best served cold'. My vote is nine.

Good movie for disgruntled fans of Ceaușescu

Grim urban drama about the catastrophic breakdown of Romanian society in the post-Ceaușescu era. Contains footage of the last remaining functional infrastructure in Bucharest (two street lights and a stop sign).

The Romanians stomp around moodily, jabbering to each other in heavily accented English, arranging murders for hire, looking for small girls to rape, and occasionally grunting a word or two in their primitive dialect.

For his part the protagonist spends most of his time killing Romanians, so if you're a Ceaușescu fan you'll find this movie deeply satisfying. I definitely got more than I bargained for.

I rate Interview with a Hit-man at 26.64 on the Haglee Scale, which works out as a stunning 8/10 on IMDb.
