lovely film about a controversial subject

"Heaven is for Real" is based on the book of the same name. I'll admit up front, I didn't read it.

The son of a preacher, Todd Burpo (Greg Kinnear) becomes critically ill and when he gets well, he tells his parents that he went to heaven, met the big cheese (I guess it was Jesus), met his grandfather and met his sister, whom his mother (Kelly Reilly) miscarried and he never knew about.

The interesting thing here is that his father and many others in the parish don't know what to make of it. They find it disturbing and his father questions his own belief in things he's been telling his parishoners for years. It gets to the point in the parish where there is talk of replacing Burpo.

I thought this was a good movie, which didn't hit everyone on the head with Christianity and stayed away from sentimentality.

I find the whole subject of life after death and near-death experience a fascinating topic, all the more fascinating because science's attempt to explain it has failed. We've heard about the euphoric state that causes the wonderful feeling of peace, we've heard what causes hallucinations yada yada yada but no one has been able to explain why, while all these brain functions are apparently going on, the patients have flatlined and there is no brain activity.

I used to watch a show on, I believe, A&E called Life After Life where real people recounted their experience. These weren't near-death experiences. They were DEATH experiences. All of these people had been pronounced dead, and they came back by some miracle - none of them were expected to live. These stories were similar but different.

What impressed me about those stories and the little boy's story is that each person had an experience that he or she could understand, so they weren't all the same. I understand at the end of the book, the boy describes some sort of battle that seemed to some reviewers like a video game description. That fits in with what the Life After Life people said, because a child would be able to relate to that.

This is a controversial subject, and any time there is a film that describes life after death, positive thinking, the law of attraction, etc., it is bludgeoned by IMDb. That's fine. I believe the spirit continues, and I found this a nice movie.

Expected Better! 3/10

Review: Although this movie has a deep subject matter which is sweat and emotional, I couldn't help getting bored after a while. The pace of the film is pretty slow and I spent most of the time, waiting for something to happen. Once the whole going to heaven aspect has been covered, the movie doesn't really go anywhere. I thought that the town was unsympathetic towards the little boy and the pastor who try and convince people about kids magical experience. At the end of the day, the director made a poor movie with a great concept, but I would read the book after learning about this unique experience from such a little child. Disappointing!

Round-Up: I'm surprised that this movie didn't get a major release in the UK, after making so much money at the box office. Maybe it's because the book wasn't really that big over here! Anyway, the performances were pretty average from the main characters, but the little boy was believable and touching. Greg Kinnear seems to play the same type of roles in his movies, but that's not to say that he isn't a good actor. I liked his performances in Little Miss Sunshine and As Good As It Gets, but he hasn't played that many leading roles. Kelly Riley was great in Flight and Sherlock Holmes but she's yet to become a household name. She did bring some emotion to her role in this movie but it's the direction and poor execution by the director that let the movie down.

Budget: $12million Worldwide Gross: $101million (WOW!)

I recommend this movie to people who are into there emotional dramas about a young boys visit heaven during a near death experience. 3/10

"He went to heaven. And then he came back."

Of course there will be disbelievers regarding a story like "Heaven Is for Real", but you also have many such explained phenomena, like people who have passed on a plane flight that went on to crash killing everyone aboard, or those who sense an impending disaster like a hurricane or flood that levels a town. The 1959-1961 television series "One Step Beyond" chronicled numerous instances of events that could only be regarded as supernatural or other-worldly. This film can be a deeply moving and spiritual experience for those who question their faith, much as Todd Burpo (Greg Kinnear) did when his son Colton (Connor Corum) began relating his experiences from the other side. The story makes it a point to mention that Colton didn't actually die, though his sensations and observations did resemble those of people who have undergone a near death experience. Pastor Burpo was able to reconcile all those conflicting emotions shared by his wife, his parishoners and himself near the end of the film with that emotional, heart tugging sermon that elevates his congregation in a way that helps all of them understand that Colton underwent a life altering encounter. Personally, I like to keep an open mind on events like this, even if some of the specifics lend themselves to some questioning. The clincher in this story for me was when Colton revealed the identity of an unborn and unnamed sister he met while in heaven, which had to come as a shock to parents who never confided the information to their children.
