different kind of role for Firth

"Gambit" from 2012 is okay - it's a remake from the '60s Gambit starring Michael Caine and Shirley Maclaine.

Firth plays an art expert who loathes his boss (Alan Rickman) and decides to cheat him by getting him to buy a fake Monet. In this version, his partner is not a Hong Kong dancer but a good ol' girl from Texas, played by Cameron Diaz.

This is a surprising film from the Coen brothers, who are usually more edgy and darkly funny. This movie really just comes off as silly. Colin Firth is slightly miscast though as usual he's excellent. I agree with one review in that Hugh Grant would have been a better choice.

Alan Rickman is the horrible boss and is perfect, and Stanley Tucci is fun as Firth's competitor, a German art expert.

Well-acted, this is a fun movie that would have been dreck with a lesser cast.

Not Bad but Not Exactly a Masterpiece Either

Fed up with his rude and denigrating boss by the name of "Lord Shabandar" (Alan Rickman) an art curator by the name of "Harry Deane" (Colin Firth) comes up with a scheme to swindle a large sum of money from him by getting an artist known as "The Major" (Tom Courtenay) to paint a reproduction of Monet's "Haystacks at Dusk" in an effort to fool Shabandar into buying it. Once the painting is finished Harry also convinces a woman from Texas named "P.J. Puznowski" (Cameron Diaz) to pretend that she was given this masterpiece from her grandfather who obtained it from Herman Goring's private gallery during World War 2. Unfortunately, it soon transpires that everybody involved is much smarter than Harry and as a result things don't go exactly as planned. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that this movie certainly had some potential. However, even with the decent cast of characters, it wasn't quite as good as it should have been due in large part to the uneven pacing and the crude humor. That being said, despite these faults I suppose it's good enough for a rainy day and for that reason I have rated it accordingly. Average.

Not a bad Film but a familiar couple!

Approx halfway through the film I realized what was nagging me that was all rather familiar?.... but of course!.... it was Inspector Clouseau (Colin Firth) getting punched on the nose 3 times, loosing his trousers, getting a glass jar stuck on his hand, getting stranded ten floors up on a window ledge, whilst Dreyfus (Alan Rickman) hated him and wanted rid of him at all costs. There was a woman in it too, Cameron Diaz, while Tom Courtenay kept popping in and out. But not a bad film.
