Not Bad Comedy!

Ice Cube and Charlie Day star in this 2017 comedy. Day plays mild-mannered, High School teacher, Campbell who endures a day from hell after he's challenged to a fight by other teacher, Strickland (Cube) whom he gets fired because of his violent temper. Campbell goes to great lengths trying to get him to change him mind, but toughens up in the process. Tracy Morgan, Christina Hendricks and Jillian Bell are also featured. This is a pretty good flick that makes an obvious reference to "Three O'Clock High," it's humorous and Cube & Day are great in it. Give this one a try at least once.

Funny! What'd You Expect?

Fist Fight is exactly what I hoped for, over-the-top comedy about a ridiculous situation with plenty of one-liners. This type of film is the bread and butter of comedies. And it works well, despite what critics need to say about it. Forget about all that high-brow analysis and have some fun with this movie.

Charlie Day's Andy Campbell is well-meaning, but he's a wuss in every conceivable way. Ice Cube plays the tough, intimidating "scared-straight" teacher at the school. Sparks break out between the two, and Ice Cube's Strickland (a nod to "Back To The Future?") turns out to be the character with the most surprises. Charlie Day is enjoyable as always as a ranting, stressed out English teacher who's way, WAY out of his depth with the fist fight and trying for most of the movie to get out of it. Rounding out the cast are the great Dean Norris (Breaking Bad), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), the always funny Jillian Bell & Kumail Nanjiani, each of which are given plenty of funny. Tracey Morgan may fall the most flat, but his part doesn't give him much to do but complain and be the butt of a prank.

The students are the real antagonist here, although it could be seen more as Campbell is his own antagonist. Either way, too much analysis gets in the way of enjoying big entertainment value, especially as the fight looms closer and closer. If you like the low budget, high-talent, low-brow comedy, Fist Fight should be on your watchlist!

Perfectly Average Comedy,

Fist Fight is a mediocre movie with a reasonably well developed plot and a good comedic cast. It is simple fun while it lasts, what really made the film worthwhile for me, overall, was Charlie Day. He has a terrific comedic presence and naturalness to himself that makes him a pleasure to watch. Day is also joined by some great improv comedic talent that includes Tracy Morgan, Jillian Bell and Kumail Nanjiani, who all shine in their scenes.

However, it is a very by the numbers comedy that never does anything original or off the cuff. The movie plays things very safe and seems almost afraid to do something really out of the ordinary that would make us laugh more than just a little chuckle, it felt like a movie that was once a very original script, turned in to something formulaic and bland thanks to studio involvement.

Ice Cube delivered quite a boring performance in this film, doing absolutely nothing we have never seen him do before, and failing to make some comedic changes, like he did in the Jump Street movies. Instead, he goes for a bland delivery of his dialogue that makes for an unsatisfactory viewing, as the film builds up to him punching Day in the face, a lackluster set up.

Has it moments, but quite forgettable. If you are a big fan of any of this movie's comedic talents, then you might want to give it a watch, but Fish Fight is an unexceptional, mundane comedy that never surprised me.

A school teacher is challenged to fight another teacher after unintentionally getting him fired.

Best Performance: Charlie Day / Worst Performance: Ice Cube
