Better Than What The Critics Said!

'Father Figures' is no great movie. But it isn't a bad movie either. At least not as bad as the critics called it. Its, at its very core, a very watchable comedy, that, believe it or not, has got a heart too.

'Father Figures' Synopsis: Upon learning that their mother has been lying to them for years about their allegedly deceased father, two fraternal twin brothers hit the road in order to find him.

'Father Figures' is a tale of two brothers, who go on a journey to find their real dad, but end up exploring each other more than they could've imagined. And this story, though monotonous after a point, has some funny jokes that land & the banter between its brothers, has moments that evoke mirth & some genuine emotion too. I found myself emotionally connected in the film's concluding moments, which I least expected too. Having said that, there is no denying that 'Father Figures' gets repetitive & even some of its jokes don't land. Also, the length could've been trimmed by 10-15 minutes.

Justin Malen's Screenplay is a mixed bag, but there are some nice things here, that leave a mark. Lawrence Sher's Direction is adequate. Cinematography is satisfactory. Editing could've been tighter. Art & Costume Design are standard.

Performance-Wise: Owen Wilson & Ed Helms are extremely likable. Both of the terrific actors add a lot to their roles & excel in the comedic & emotional bits. The Legendary Glenn Close appears in a cameo as the mother of the boys & as usual, lends grace to the part. Among the dads, Terry Bradshaw is fun to watch, J. K. Simmons wild & The Great Christopher Walken gets barely anything to do. Ving Rhames & Katt Williams are funny.

On the whole, 'Father Figures' is an entirely watchable comedy, that has its pros & cons. Not a bad Sunday noon watch!

Watch it for the strange supporting characters they meet along the way.

"Father Figure" is a highly unusual movie because I wasn't too fond of the plot of the film....but I loved the quirky characters so much that the plot itself didn't really matter so much. Sure, it is ridiculous in spots...but overall it's well worth seeing.

When the story begins, two twins, Peter and Kyle (Ed Helms and Owen Wilson), are visiting with their mother (Glenn Close). The generally uptight Peter asks his mother about their father...a man he and Kyle never knew. She makes up a lie and tells them it's Terry Bradshaw! Soon, they go on a road trip and meet Terry. Bradshaw is thrilled to learn he has two sons...but eventually realizes he cannot be the boys' dad. He gives them a clue which takes them to a very unsavory guy (J.K. Simmons) and so on....as the boys go through clus after clue and think four different guys are their dad! Where will this all end?

I loved the supporting characters in this one. In addition to Bradshaw and Simmons, Katt Williams was fantastic...perhaps the best of the supporting folks. And, there were a few other great cameos that make it very enjoyable. On the negative side, the film is quite crude and sexual (though I do think the R rating is too severe--perhaps it should have been PG-13) and things work out too perfectly too many times for the film to have a lot of real depth. But, on balance, the good far outweighs the bad and I'd like to see more from these folks.

Father Figures

Last time I saw a pair of unlikely twins looking for a parent. It was the 1988 comedy Twins with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito. Father Figures is nowhere near as good.

Father Figures sees non identical twins Peter (Ed Helms) and Kyle Reynolds (Owen Wilson) find out from their mother Helen (Glenn Close) on her wedding day that their late father was not their daddy. In fact their father is still alive.

Helen admits to being promiscuous in the 1970s and thinks the twins father might be ex football star Terry Bradshaw. Peter and Kyle head to Miami Beach to find Bradshaw but discover that he cannot be their father.

The bickering twins continue their road trip as they believe the universe is calling. They look for other men their mother might had slept with. When the twins are not fighting or complaining they are telling strange old men that they are their sons.

Father Figures is a desperately lame comedy. Not funny and much of it is boring.
