When Animals Attack Bad Movies

I was stunned at how bad this movie was - so predictable, so lame and another one of these Hollywood studio processed films where it doesn't even seem like reality - like it is this parallel universe that Hollywood creates where people have jobs like boat brokers and parent, grown son interventionist! They all have names like Ace, Demo, Kit, Tripp and Captain!! We all knew EXACTLY what was going to happen the minute Sara Jessica Parker says "I never have sex with a client." Gee - wonder if she will with Matthew - er, sorry - Tripp...I also cant believe that the movie invested sooooo much time in a subplot where someone wants to murder a mockingbird. Wow! That's funny! And obviously the studio found it hilarious whenever an animal attacks a human! Woo-hoo, that's some funny comedy - Billy Wilder could learn a thing or two from these fine filmmakers about what is truly funny. A chipmunk attacks, a dolphin attacks, a mockingbird bites the guy's nose like in a Goofy cartoon oh - and a lizard attacks - and after he does - they show him snickering - thus making the snickering lizard more three-dimensional than any of the supporting characters. Plus, it really was truly creepy what SJP's character tries to do - to "date" screwed-up, mainly lonely guys and make them think she likes them to try and get them to move out. The one other scene where they show her "working" - the guy is the typical fat, nerdy slob who quotes Star Wars and you watch her pretend to like him. Man! That is one creepy job there (almost as creepy as being a boat broker. I kid! I kid the boat brokers and all the members of The Boat Brokering Association). This movie is just a mind-freeze - watch point A move to Point B and then to Point C - now go home. The fact that this thing made TONS of money says it all.

The cuckoo waltz

Looking back at this now, you can sense that Matthew McConaughey realised his days as a lead in light romantic comedies would eventually be numbered. There is only so much much mileage in the slightly arrogant, selfish 30 something sports jock with an easy charm for the ladies and bonhomie with his male friends. It all got cheesy very quickly.

Sarah Jessica Parker is Paula whose job is to date men who still live with their parents and are reluctant to leave home. By getting them to transfer their allegiance from the parents to her, they will then be willing to fly the nest.

Tripp (McConaughey) is proud to be living in his parent's house. His two best friends Bradley Cooper and Justin Bartha (both from the 'Hangover' films) also live with their parents as well. Paula is hired by his exasperated parents. It seems this is easier than saying 'son, its time you left.'

Tripp is unlike other clients Paula has dealt with, charming, handsome, athletic, normal social skills, no low esteem and she ends up falling for him.

Its a light plot and a flimsy story which becomes increasingly silly and unbelievable. The side plot involving Tripp's friends where they go paint-balling, rock climbing, mountain biking and incidents with various animals tends to be more amusing and pads out the movie. I bet the director now wishes he had more scenes with Cooper in the film.

Zooey Deschanel as Paula's acerbic roommate is more memorable than Sarah Jessica Parker and her budding romance with Bartha looks more interesting.

The film eventually ties itself up in knots, literally in order to come to a satisfying conclusion to satisfy the romantic comedy conventions.

I hate almost every character

Tripp (Matthew McConaughey) is a thirty something who refuses to leave the nest. His parents (Terry Bradshaw, Kathy Bates) are tired of it and they hire specialist Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker) to lure him out. She makes the guys fall for her and set him launching out of the family home. Then there is Tripp's friend Ace (Justin Bartha) who falls for Paula's friend Kit (Zooey Deschanel).

It's safe to say that I hate almost every single character with the exception of the hilarious Zooey Deschanel. Tripp is tiresome and annoying babbling his life philosophy. Paula is callous and cold. Even the parents are annoying. I really dislike everybody in this movie. It takes forever for Tripp to show his human side. By then I couldn't care less. I don't like the couple before and I don't care if they get together. Other than a couple of funny jokes and wacky Zooey, this is an annoying movie. It would be a better movie if this was about the friends of the leads. Ace and Kit are a hilarious couple. They could make a funny film.
