Underrated in America

Along with Capturing the Friedmans, I thought this was the best 2003 release in America. In 2003, everyone talked endlessly and breathlessly in the USA about Mystic River or Lost in Translation, but I felt Dirty Pretty Things was far superior. I think the story was extremely interesting, and when the twist at the end happened, I didn't see it coming at all, and that's a great thing when you watch a movie like this. This was probably considered Chiwetel's Ejiofor's first significant role, and he was great in it. And Sergi Lopez knows how to play a great bad guy. Audrey Tautou and Sophie Okonedo also did a good job in supporting roles. All around, just a great effort by Frears

Beautiful drama

"Dirty Pretty Things" is sometimes sold also as a thriller film, actually it is an impressive drama, well written and directed.

The story is about an irregular immigrant doctor from Nigeria who lives in London and leads a double life: during the day he is a driver while by night he works in the front desk of a hotel, managed by a slimy Spanish man.

One night he discovers a human heart stuck in the toilet in a room of the hotel. Since that moment he is obsessed with that discovery and tries to understand why the heart was there. The film shows what poor people face to live a respectable life, especially in a big city like London, how they agree to a compromise to be happy.

Without any doubt, Chiwetel Ejiofor is a great actor, his gaze is pained and plays extraordinarily his role, perfectly identified in the character's suffering. Sergi Lopez also deserves a mention, creepy and slimy. In the cast there are also Audrey Tautou as a Turkish immigrant who illegally works in the hotel as maid and Sophie Okonedo who is a prostitute.

Massive disappointment

I had high expectations -- I like the films of Frears. But this one just doesn't do it for me. The characters are walking stereotypes, and they are either saints or cartoon villains. The plot holes abound: for example, why the heart in the toilet at the beginning of the movie? I understand the need for the symbolism, but it is really contrived (where's the rest of the body... ?).

The worst fault of the movie is that it sacrifices both realism and nuance in order to clumsily and gracelessly hammer home a political thesis. Please, please progressive filmmakers, don't make such manicheistic movies: I feel a tiny bit less left wing after having seen Dirty Pretty Things, as a reaction against its ham-fistedness and single- mindedness.
