Not that bad

I didn't bother to see this in a theater because of the poor reviews, but finally rented it. I think this is actually a pretty funny movie. It is certainly predictable, perhaps trite and derivative, but it's well cast and written, and provided an entertaining evening for my wife and me. Seeing the extra features on the DVD helped, as it's obvious that the cast and director were having a lot of fun making the film. The excellent cast's sense of enjoyment came through to me, and increased my enjoyment.

Definitely watch the extra features. One in particular made me want to go play with a bear.

Maybe Carrie'll write a book about it

Even though Sarah J. Parkers character in this is not a copy of her "Carrie" character (of Sex and the City fame), it will be difficult not to see her as that. The voice is the same, she even lives in New York and has an obsession about it. But that's not the worst about the movie, nor the predictability of the whole thing.

As another reviewer stated, you know what you are getting yourself into by watching a romantic comedy. You cannot go into this thing and expect something different. What you may expect (and sometimes get too) is a coherent plot, a nice storyline and likable characters. Well you get nothing of that here. You get a few laughs, that's true. But there is no apparent chemistry (though you have to give them points for trying).

Kudos especially to Hugh Grant, who plays a role, with a situation, very close to the one he had in his real life with his ex-girlfriend, Elizabeth Hurley. But still seeing him play this pathetic character, you are never charmed by him. Sam Elliot tries to ground the whole thing, but there are quite a few jokes that just don't work out. While they seemed to have a lot of fun on set (the longest outtake scene, doesn't make any sense without the knowledge given by the audio commentary), but it doesn't translate onto the screen.

I don't like them, and I really don't like her

Paul (Hugh Grant) and Meryl Morgan (Sarah Jessica Parker) are an estranged NY couple. She's a high strung stereotypical A-type personality real estate agent. He's a lawyer trying to reconnect after cheating on her. They witness a murder and now they are in danger. The FBI sends them to Wyoming to hide in witness protection.

It's very simple. I don't like these people. More specifically, I don't like her. She comes off as an annoyingly high maintenance whiny snooty NYers. And coming off a cheating fight, these two have all the chemistry of a wet rag. The jokes barely pass as actual jokes. It doesn't help that I don't like the people telling the jokes. There is some value in the fish out of water routine. But all the value can't be realized by these two characters.
