Crumbs and Twine

OK film that strains to be 'gripping'.

Gene Hackman is fine as a submarine captain who must battle with the second-in-command (Denzel Washington in an annoying portrayal). The movie dog-paddles along using crummy clich├ęs that are intertwined with familiarizations of other navy flicks like The Caine Mutiny and The Hunt for Red October.

The only real question here is which officer (Hackman or Washington) is going to triumph at the end of the film by making the 'right decision' concerning the prospect of the release of nuclear missiles. Script inadequacies include the over-use of expletives and a silly racist element. See this for Gene Hackman's usual solid performance, but really, folks, you've seen this mutiny and submarine stuff before.

P.S. Note to the director - and many other directors whom make this same mistake..... Unless they're receiving a citation, MILITARY PERSONNEL DO NOT SALUTE INDOORS!

We May Be Headed in This Direction

Two of our heavyweight actors play opposites in this wonderful suspense film. Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington are give some orders in their submarine. The problem is that the orders are not clear and three is impulse versus caution. Gene Hackman is the wizened veteran who has quite an ego. The stakes are high and Denzel Washington needs to follow the restraints he has had embedded in him. There are great scenes of conflict and tension. This is no ordinary decision and the implications of what is done are incredibly significant. Just watch the two fine actors work at their craft. Remember, also, there are some other factors beyond the mission that are involved here.

One of the best submarine films.

How far can a misunderstanding between two stubborn men go when they are stuck inside a confined space? This movie answers that question inside an American submarine when a stubborn veteran commander no longer understands his first officer, younger and idealistic. To make matters worse, they are facing a major crisis, waiting for an attack at any moment. This thriller is undeniably good and has a story that holds our attention and makes us aware of any fight between these two men. Both are right in their ideas, so they can not dialogue in order to appease themselves. A fight that can have unthinkable consequences, since the core of the issue is the use of nuclear weapons contained in the ship. The situation is obviously dramatic and the script explores the nuclear fears of today's society very well. Denzel Washington shines in the role of the Officer Hunter and Gene Hackman is a veteran with decades of work that returns to show its value. The sets and costumes are excellent, as are special effects and sound effects. In my view, the film's weakest point comes at the very end, where the two men who have been harshly confronted throughout history end up almost like friends. This does not seem to agree with the stubborn and proud personality of any of them and goes against logic, however nice it may seem for the end of a movie.
