Inspires childlike excitement and adventure

As the story unfolds and the scene is set, my attention was grabbed by the detail of the environments and the characters.

This is a movie that provokes that same feeling of wonder, exploration and adventure that reminds my of classics like Goonies or Lord of the rings.

The pacing is great and the story moves on at just the right pace although a part of me wishes that the film was longer so as to focus more on some of the other characters but this is a real, good quality rainy Sunday afternoon film.

I gave it 8 out of 10, I was surprised that it has such a low average score on here.

A equal of equal quality in which we discover more and hopefully see Bill Murray back would actually enrich this first movie and open it up even more.

A great idea with a failed implementation

With the end of the world approaching, a team of the most wise scientists decides to create a new city underground, known as Ember, powered by an enormous generator. Many years after, as the power source begins to fail more and more often, two teenagers start looking for a way out of the dying city, although this act would mean to break the law.

It's a story which bases on a very interesting idea, of building an entire city underground, but fails in implementing it and especially in creating an interesting story, one which can build up suspense or drama. What is even worse is that the characters seem to act very childish, almost like they were ten year old kids who cannot tell the difference between good and wrong, making often head scratching decisions. The whole movie looks and feels as it was designed for kids, especially when taking about plot and characters, although the dark atmosphere would make me think otherwise. Many things do not add up or even make sense, thus leaving a bad overall impression. No satisfaction with the finale, no drama, no suspense. It really is a shame that they couldn't do more with such a good idea that they had.

A good family flick

The sets are beautiful and the acting is very good (I am very critical of child/teen actors in general but the main characters were great fits for their roles). The movie is slightly cartoonish in the exaggerated stereo-types shown. The world they inhabit is simplistic and the people are mostly friendly and helpful to each other. It is not a dark movie despite the ominous feelings of doom approaching.

The lead up is rushed and I'm not sure if really young viewers would get the gist of what's going on. The rest of the story-line is easy to follow and interesting enough to engage all age groups. Some of the action sequences didn't make a lot of sense which I forgave. I just let logic go at some point near the end and enjoyed the experience.

The giant mutated animals had no explanation, and didn't progress the story-line at all. I'm pretty sure they could have been dispensed with. I also thought the escape route wouldn't be the most efficient way to evacuate an entire population.

Forget that stuff if you can and you'll enjoy the ride.
