Jackie Chan doing Jackie Chan

Twelve bronze heads representing the Chinese zodiac were looted during the Opium War. JC aka Asian Hawk (Jackie Chan) and his action team are trying to recover them. With replicas of the heads, they travel to Paris where some of the bronzes are being auctioned. Disguised as a National Geographic photographer, he infiltrates a protest group led by Coco trying to repatriate stolen antiquities.

Asian Hawk is a Jackie Chan character from the 80's in the Armour of God movies. It's not the greatest of writing but it's just simple fun action adventure. It is very much HK comedy style from the 80's and 90's. Jackie is able to excel in his outrageous stunt work. He's still fun and still half man, half amazing. It probably needs a more steady presence from a head villain and one super henchman which all good Bond movies deserve. Instead, there is a myriad of villains like The Warriors including a Pirates of the Caribbean gang. For example, Oliver Platt could have been that head villain but he only has a short cameo. Jackie fans will find a fine silly Jackie movie. Others may not appreciate the appeal.

From a very non-fan perspective ? This movie is fine.

Guys, let's make it clear first, I am a huge fan of Jackie Chan, but to write a proper review, I have to dismiss that entirely, right ? Don't worry, I am not gonna spoil anything "HUGE" or remarkable at all. But I'd rather disclaim myself by tagging it as "spoiler".

Well for starters, the title isn't gonna hook you from the get-go, you really wonder what a "Chinese Zodiac" movie would be like, but then you read the summary and you find it controversial. Well, Chinese Zodiac is a movie that has pretty obvious morale spots throughout it, it has crime, also a reasonable plot line (except for the "Treasure Boat" thing, and the clan that rushed on them, this is not necessarily a spoiler if you haven't watched the movie), and a good ending.

It has really good stunts and stuff, (altho the 'sky diving' at the end really controverted with physics), but as a whole it was really good, and we saw typical Jackie Chan risk his life doing the stunts, this alone would force me into liking this movie.

What really bugged me is the backstory of the "family breakup" or whatever that was, they did not make it clear, and also the dubbing was god-awful. I didn't like the English Dub, I wish they just kept it Chinese and then I would read the English subs. You just feel like some amateur audio editing took place during the production of the English version.

Bottom line is, it's not like the type of movies I would recommend, but it remains good. 6~7/10

Appropriate send-off in my opinion

I watched this movie without seeing the reviews and enjoyed it very very much. Which is why I'm quite surprised of the low reviews it's been getting from critics.

Sure, many dialogues were corny and the plot is borderline ridiculous. But do you really go to a Jackie Chan movie for its story?

The stunts and fight scenes in this movie are simply amazing. I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't watched it yet, but if you grew up watching Jackie's earlier films (80s and 90s), you're gonna be pleasantly reminded of his golden days. He's not as fast or as nimble, but it is still light years better than the typical 'hollywood' action scenes.

As mentioned, story and dialogue: meh. Think of it as a vehicle for the action that ensues. You'll get a few trademark comedy reminiscent of Jackie's earlier works, and overall it's a very good family film. But action is the hook of this movie. It's seriously so good that you'll come in with expectations of great action, and still come out thinking that was better than expected.

If you're a fan of Jackie, this is a no-brainer must-watch. If you're not a fan, give it a chance as it is still an extremely solid action movie.
