You Missed

Vivian Fontaine (Ashley Bell) is taken hostage during A robbery of Mackin Bank (Macon already done) in southern California 1978. Prison escapees Scorpion Joe (James Landry H├ębert) and is Mice and Men side kick Lenny (Michael Villar) pass through the private property of Wyatt Moss (Pat Healy) a one man militia where trespassers are hunted. At this point you get the idea as Vivian must fight for her life.

This is a me-too film which starts off rather well, Tarantino grindhouse style and peters out very quickly when the only guy with personality is killed off. Vivian has a flashback to the bank, but no clever flashbacks to her time as a dirt farmer giving her skill and courage for survival.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Somewhere between Rob Zombie and Quention T...

Mickey Keating is a director worth checking out. His films aren't perfect, peppered with self-indulgent dollops of his signature flash-out-of-the-darkness sequences that often remind us that less is more. While Carnage Park ranks with his best work, there are a few scenes shot in near or total darkness that go on for too long in a misfired attempt to build suspense. When used late in his films the endings sometimes fizzle, rendering his climax a bit anti-climactic.

Despite this editorial shortcoming, Keating ranks among the best young directors working today. His casting choices are superb as is his work with the actors. Ashley Bell fans will be delighted with her performance in Carnage Park which showcases her range as an actress and her girl next door sex appeal. I could name every other actor as well, suffice it to say they all give great performances.

Action, make-up efx, cinematography are all topnotch. The editing is generally good, deftly handling a story that's disjointed but cohesive, the only questionable edits being the overly long dark sequences that really solely on the soundtrack to propel them.

The soundtrack will either thrill you or turn you off, depending on how open you are to off- the-wall soundscapes, which include a few Vietnamese songs that are too bizarre by Western commercial standards to ignore. I loved it, but you may not. Otherwise the sound mixing and the score is excellent.

If you enjoyed QT's Pulp Fiction or RZ's Devil's Rejects you'll probably dig this as well.

Such a fantastic indie crime/horror film!

It's a indie crime/horror film about the sniper and the girl trying to escape, or kill him. I really liked it a lot! It has excellent editing, brilliant cinematography, nice story, good performances. The Last Exorcism's Ashley Bell is supposed to be annoying from it, but I actually think she gave a superb performance. While the first hour was entertaining, but I didn't really enjoy the last 25 minutes because mine scene was so darkly filmed and should have been shorter. But again, it has a fine story. If you are a fan of Tarantino/Rob Zombie films, then you will for sure enjoy it (well, maybe except the last 25 minutes). This movie don't deserves a low rating, I think it's actually such a fantastic film and totally underrated. Just entertaining and enjoyable movie!

8/10.
