The Horse version of 12 years a slave

I first watched this movie, when i was a little kid, maybe fourth grade or earlier, before i saw this film i thought horses were boring and girly, after watching this movie, i begged my parents to buy a horse! The movie is a little slow, especially for those with low attention spans, and when i first hear Alan cumming ( Floop from spy kids) narrating for the horse, i cringe every time, but it starts to grow on me with his kind demeanor and pleasant description of things. The movie starts with the horse being born and growing up on Sean bean's farm, when hes old enough, Sean bean begins to ride him, the horse starts galloping, faster and faster, and by this point i was honestly expecting Sean bean to fall off and die, but the scene completely takes your breath away as it shows all the wonder and beauty of nature. The horse is then sold to some rich people who own other horses, and he becomes friends with a stable boy named Joe, along with a miniature named merry legs, and one named ginger. however the happy times end after that, when beauty is sold to multiple owners some bad and some good. one of the good owners is a cabby played by Ares from wonder woman 2017; minus the mustache. while in the cobble stoned street city, you feel transported to that time era and you feel attached to the people while there. however this movie's main driving force is tragedy, beauty is sold again and he learns his old friends are dead. After years of hardship, the once beautiful horse is beaten and broken, and is being sold again, however this time he sees a older Joe and tries to gain his attention, in this moment, my entire family and I always scream at Joe to look back and notice Beauty, of course he does and the old friends are reunited, this moment is so emotional, that i have to really try to hold back the manly tears, beauty is then freed from his life of constant hardship, and is now free to spend his days living peacefully in a green pasture, dreaming about being with his old friends. i have to admit, i'm not really much of a animal person, but it is movies like these that i feel so sorry for animals living in pain and abuse, this movie really knows how to pull the right heart strings, and is still one of my personal favorite animal movies, i would say this comes right after war horse and charlie the lonesome cougar. However the movie isn't perfect, it is slow in some places, the editing and story line is very choppy, and i don't get really invested until beauty is living in hardship. i always like to compare this movie and 12 years a slave because both main characters are both......nice guys! Both start out their stories accustomed to a peaceful, good life, but are then thrown into a abusive and tragic existence. But when both are rescued by an old friend and pulled out of their painful circumstances, you truly feel the freedom, that they have deserved for so long. Great movie, and I recommend anyone to watch it.

Not so dumb animals

This film is one of the best I have seen and I've watched hundreds. I don't have a problem at all with the narration of the horse's thoughts. One thing that the 20th century did teach us was that many animals whom many humans had assumed to be somewhat stupid, were in fact highly intelligent (and possibly more so than some humans). Pigs, crows, chickens, dogs, etc are just a few examples. Thus, "dumb" does not in any way describe the highly intelligent and sensitive animal which is the horse, other than to point out that it can't speak "human". Not to say that it can't communicate with humans, but then you have to know your particular horse intimately. Difficult in a relatively short movie.

The narration cleverly and, in my opinion, very effectively, bridges this gap. Do horses know that they are about to be sold? Perhaps not, but they almost certainly are able to sense when something is amiss, and that's enough to build a story on.

And what a great story it is, as we follow this beautiful animal's passage through life, with its ups and downs, loves and hates, terrors and joys. And even sly humour in places. Throughout, the photography is stunning, with charming shots of the English countryside, and amazing sequences of the horses playing and frolicking together. No sex, of course, which is only proper.

solo narration is weird

Black Beauty (Alan Cumming) recounts his turbulent life with various owners as he finally found peace in a pasture. He was born and cared for by Farmer Grey (Sean Bean). At age 3, he is sent to Birtwick Park. His mistress Lady Gordon is ill and gives him the name Black Beauty. He is treat well by stable master John Manly (Jim Carter) and his incompetent nephew Joe. He is taken with spirited mare Ginger and befriends the smart pony Merrylegs. After Lady Gordon's death, Beauty and Ginger are sold to the cruel, pompous Lady of Wexmire at Earlshall Park. They are painful-bounded to pull her carriage. Ginger struggles with the pain and bolts. This leaves Beauty damaged. The bad treatment continues until Lord Wexmire sells him to become a rent horse under even worst conditions. He is sold once more to London taxi driver Jerry Barker (David Thewlis). It's tough work but Jerry treats him well. He sees Ginger again but she's little more than skin and bones before her death. Jerry gets sick from a freezing night and can no longer work. Beauty is sold again and forced to spend the last of his energy hauling grain. Beauty has nothing left and is on the auction blocks again but this time, he is rescued by Joe.

The narration is weird. It gives the horse Black Beauty humanity but none of the other animals have their voices. It's feels like an old-time Disney movie gone amok. What does interest me is to treat this story almost like a slave who gets sold over and over again. The ups and downs of the various cruel and humane owners are intriguing. This ends up being a tear-jerker if you're an animal lover although it could annoy the hell out of you.
