Has its moments, but not enough of them.

Loud, frenetic teen-oriented supernatural slasher attempts to show the "playful" side of filmmakers Lucky McKee and Chris Sivertson, as some reviewers put it. The story has an outsider named Maddy (Aussie actress Caitlin Stasey) joining the Blackfoot High cheerleading squad, determined to get revenge on the star jock Terry Stankus (Tom Williamson). Things go horribly wrong after a late-night party, and the core group of cheerleaders ends up dead. However, thanks to some intervention by the witchy Leena (Sianoa Smit-McPhee, another Aussie), they return from the dead - with a decided change in attitude and appetite.

The movie is fast paced, so you have to give the filmmakers that much, but the script and the characters generally lack any truly interesting features. Leena, in particular, is the kind of lone wolf Goth type character we've all seen countless times before. One mildly intriguing touch is to keep almost all adult characters firmly in the background, with the exception of a neighbour played by veteran Michael Bowen. The movie also is notable for a healthy amount of splatter devised by Robert Kurtzman (formerly of KNB), and a plethora of hilarious cheese ball visual effects. The female cast is quite attractive, although the prospect of girl watching can only sustain the movie for so long.

The cast is okay, although they're often required to not speak their dialogue so much as to yell it. Williamson is actually a standout as a VERY bad dude, the perfect stereotypical picture of a nasty, callous, "I always get what I want" type jock villain. Outside of Terry and Leena, though, the characters fail to make much of an impact.

This may satisfy undemanding genre fans, at least those hoping for a reasonable amount of sex appeal and violence.

Five out of 10.

Great title, average film

I love the title & artwork for this film, assumed that it was a slasher movie but it isn't. The cheerleaders do indeed die, killed in a car accident caused by a jealous & drunken jock. Luckily(?) for them one of their friends happens to be a witch who brings the hot chicks back to life using magic crystals. Bloody havoc ensues. A bit slow to get going but once it does it's a reasonably good mix of horror & comedy with some decent gore thrown in. Definitely a film aimed at a teen audience, it does have a Buffy/The Craft feel, plus of course girls in bikinis & guys with 6 packs. Be sure to check the name on the grave in the final scene, the film suggests that this is Part One. Can't say that a sequel is something I'd get excited about though.

I need part 2 of this oversexualized b-movie mess

This god-damn film. Up there with some of the dumbest films I've ever seen but I actually loved it. For a film that's supposed to be ridiculous I laughed with it just as much as at. I love that the main character is gay and the film isn't about that "discovering yourself" bs. Really refreshing to see as an LGBT person. Odd to see such good representation in such a mostly non serious, oversexualized B movie. If they wanted to make me hate the villain they did a great job,all admitted the transition to the story came a bit out of nowhere during the film, but it makes the motives for the protagonists revenge plot and fuels hate for the villain so much more. Its enjoyable to watch a scumbag get taken down. The humour all be it ridiculous was quite good,I laughed considerably during this film, mostly unintentionally at the special effects but also the writing was stupid and funny keeping in that dumb highschool genre all the while adding a new layer of self awareness to it. The cliffhanger at the end of the movie is killing me,please just go into production on the sequel because damn do I want to see it. Gotta be a cult classic,if not for everyone definitely for me.
