Top notch character dramedy

An interesting portrait of a couple who tries everything to fulfill their dream and become parents but forgetting what their relationship is all about in the process. A very personal film that handles about a very personal topic, wonderfully put in scene and written by Tamara Jenkins who finally presents us a follow up project after "The Savages" and it is just as realistic and natural. To make a rather sad and to some extends tragic story a dramedy thanks to very well chosen comedic moments was the right decision. She found two great actors who both know how to do drama and comedy and the mix of that. Paul Giamatti absolutely shines and gives one of his best performances in ages. The quality of his performance goes back to his "Sideways" days. Kathryn Hahn once again proves her talent as one of the most underrated versatile actresses of her generation. Glad she got to show her acting powers in such a juicey role. John Caroll Lynch also gets to show that he not only can plays psychopaths and losers. Molly Shannon is wonderful in a supporting role and commands every scene she is in. Another great performance by another great and underrated actress.Kayli Carter is a great new discovery and she will go places. An intimate portrait of a marriage that is put to a test. Absolutely recommendable.

Very good...

"Private Life" is a Comedy - Drama movie in which we watch a couple trying many fertility therapies in order to get pregnant. Their relationship gets a lot of pressure and they both have to work harder for it.

I liked this movie because it presented a very sensitive subject for a lot of people. The plot was simple but very interesting and contained many intense moments. He direction which was made by Tamara Jenkins who is also the writer, it was very good and she presented very well her main characters and made possible for the audience to understand what they have been through and even relate to them. The interpretations of both Paul Giamatti who played as Richard Grimes and Kathryn Hahn who played as Rachel Biegler were exceptional and they made the difference. Lastly, I have to say that "Private Life" is a very interesting drama movie and I recommend you to watch it.

A Tale of Thirds

During the runtime of "Private Life", there is about a third that is really emotional and captivating. Unfortunately, that section is sandwiched between two other thirds that are uninspiring, sometimes even to the point of boring, and a big letdown in terms of buildup and resolution.

For a basic plot summary, "Private Life" sees Rachel (Kathryn Hahn) and Richard (Paul Giamatti) trying to conceive a child through any means necessary. When it seems like all options have been exhausted, one more presents itself: using an egg donor. Coincidentally, step-niece Sadie (Kayli Carter), fresh out of college and a "starving artist type" is set to stay with them for a time as she re-evaluates her own life. This could be exactly the opportunity Rachel & Richard are looking for...but will it work out?

As I stated in the opener, let's break this movie down into thirds:

The first third details the couple's attempts at conception, and what should be emotional is played about as goofily as possible. I was so disappointed in this section of the film that I began to wonder if I was even going to make it to the end with any interest left intact.

When Sadie shows up in the second third, things really perk up, as the chemistry she has with everyone on screen is palpable. For a film in which the two leads are supposed to clearly be the main stars, Carter absolutely stole the show for me. Because of her presence, I became invested in the fertility journey again.

Sadly, the final third (containing the "resolution") is nearly as bad as the first, taking all the goodwill from the middle of the piece and flushing it nearly all away. I don't mind endings that are open doors, or that don't necessarily give the audience exactly what they want, but even then I was still incredibly disappointed with the way this one all goes down.

I think the bottom line with "Private Life" is that if you are looking for a riveting drama all the way through (like I was), you might be disappointed. The tone is too goofy for large stretches, and it wanders around both in its beginning and end. Of its just over two hour runtime, only about 50 minutes is truly engrossing. As such, for half a good film I'll give it half the star capacity here.
